Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Here's an analysis of how the republicans voted.
It's definitely over-optimistic, but I still love the Dems for it. Given how little power we hold in Washington right now, I just love that the Democrat S.O.P. right now is to just troll the shit out of Republicans.
If we're funny enough, it might actually help our chances of winning seats in 2018. If we learn nothing else from 2016, we should take away the unfortunate truth that memes mean more than facts now.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. This country's leadership wants to define "normal" as Rich, White, Christian, Straightnote , and Male - in that order. There are nuances to each of those categories, but they all get smoothed over by enough cash... to an extent. Which we will no doubt see the limits of, more and more.
I can't agree with this in its entirety. If money is the thing they care about most, then logically the Republicans would care more about the opinions of rich and middle class African-Americans than the opinions of angry, poor whites. This is demonstrably not the case. While they certainly have no interest in actually helping poor whites, they're more than happy to enlist their anger at minorities to keep said minorities, even the already wealthy ones, from succeeding. I also definitely don't concur that they like black men more than they like white women, which your "in that order" comment would also imply—if anything they're still in that 1860s mentality of having to protect white women from black men.
I'd say its more fluid. Certainly the closer you are to being all of the above (rich, white, straight, male, and Christian) the more they'll like you, but I wouldn't say that wealth trumps race or race trumps sexism.

I'd say Obama is walking proof that wealth does not trump race. The Republicans have never forgiven him for being a wealthy, influential black man.

Oh God! Natural light! Then he'd be expected to be Ben Carson. He could stand behind Trump, smile, and pretend like he knows what he's doing, but not actually step on any white men's toes.

Plus, given that he admits to not understanding how hard the job would be, he might not comprehend that this thing has to pass through both houses of the Congress and that the job's not actually done yet.

For now. It's likely the GOP will keep pushing versions of the bill until people get exhausted and it goes through.
