Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

x6 Anyone with a republican senator better be calling their reps, no excuses. I'll be affected by this and if and when I die anyone in this thread who said "it's useless, my rep is firmly republican" will be haunted by my Zombie goast for all eternity.

Honestly, there was a chance that the GOP might have to take a long, hard look in the mirror, realize how far they'd fallen to arrive at this ungodly point, and reflect.
That chance went out the window on the morning of November 9th, 2016. The GOP went to bed with the worst, most atrocious parts of themselves and it paid off bigger than human decency ever has. They're beyond saving now.

As long as goodness and luck exists with you, you'll survive. Regardless of all odds of what can happen, never think you should die, you deserve to live.
I'm not being insensitive, I'm just giving reassurance and hope to you instead of thinking about death immediately. Things are not OK but it's not over yet.

The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.@M84: I swear, they're ****ing Disney villains at this point. Unfortunately, this narrative doesn't work on Disney rules and therefore the villains can win.
"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryI'll certainly survive. I'm a poorly-educated cis-gendered heterosexual white male. I belong to that precious WWC that radical leftists won't shut up about. I am in no danger whatsoever.
It's everyone else, I'm worried about.
EDIT: Oh, your arrows were off. That makes more sense.

If only. Most of the hardcore gun fanatics will line up nice and quietly for their own slaughter-by-GOP, like good little lambs. They'll even drag the rest of us kicking and screaming to share in the doom.
To them, the only government worth overthrowing in violent revolution is a Democrat-run one, regardless of its merits.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryHonestly, the fact that all gun-owners are proud to line up on the side of despotism and volunteer to keep the common folk in line is probably the greatest argument against the Second Amendment that has ever existed in our country. It, like the Electoral College, has thoroughly failed its intent.
Thomas Jefferson gets to kindly shut the f*ck up about that "Tree of Liberty" nonsense now.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.@Luigi-san: If ever the Republican party did purge their negative elements, it would likely be done by ones who are not currently in power, or even old enough to be party members. In other words, it'll take years, and a lot of what people are pointing out to you is that they don't have that kind of time. You're sounding a bit like a broken record now, which is, yes, just a bit insensitive. I'm not a fan of the obsessive negativity this thread falls into myself (especially since it falls into demonizing people and saying they deserve to suffer when that happens) but repeatedly saying "have hope" without adding anything else to the conversation is not as reassuring as you think it is.
As for the actual topic: BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Eh. I had the news on and ended up changing the channel because I couldn't stand the sound of their voices anymore. I hate that this is going to the Senate.
According to this article from VOX
: Mike Lee (Utah), Rand Paul (Kentucky), Dean Heller (Nevada), Shelley Moore Capito (West Virginia). That's 4 Republicans. I'm also hearing that Rob Portman (Ohio) is also against it, which would be 5. Bill Cassidy (Louisiana), Lindsey Graham (South Carolina), Susan Collins (Maine) and Jeff Flake (Arizona) are voicing their concerns and doubts about the bill. I might be missing some more.
Things look good, for now, that the AHCA can't pass in the Senate. They are certainly not going to pass it before the CBO gets it's scoring out.
And I'd argue that none of those categories even really matter. What does matter is very simple: Do you have money?
This country's leadership wants to define "normal" as Rich, White, Christian, Straightnote , and Male - in that order. There are nuances to each of those categories, but they all get smoothed over by enough cash... to an extent. Which we will no doubt see the limits of, more and more.

As someone else pointed out, there's already Senate Republicans openly opposing the AHCA from the House
, namely one from Ohio and one from Nevada.
And incidentally, it was the Democrats singing after the AHCA passed
- the song in question, though, was "nah nah nah nah, hey hey hey, goodbye", since they figure that the majority of those that voted for this abomination will be losing their seat in 2018. Of course, there's a solid argument to be made that this is overly-optimistic, given what happened in 2013 (gov't shutdown) and the following election.
