The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't think any of you should worry about your temperament. The USA just elected a gibbering gibbon as president, despite his many personality flaws. All you actually have to do is find a way to make your quirks "funny". I watched a video recently that argued, fairly successfully I think, that Trump was able to win election because people saw his raging problems, acknowledged them, and then convinced themselves that they were voting for a sitcom character.

What I'm getting from this is none of us would be fit for politics because we'd be too high on venting outrage. Well, maybe not me, but I'd have other crippling issues besides that.

Someone mentioned not banking on this bill failing in the senate because anything is possible-I'll be sticking to that. As easy as it is to say "well they won't be THAT stupid" I've said that already and yes, they really are. The one uniting front besides "OBAMA BAD" in congress is "fuck poor people and women" and this is both those things in one shitty package.

Neither is proper perspective. It doesn't make sense to assuming the unlikely thing will happen just because it's terrible and other terrible things have happened. Which, I mean, I get situations like this are emotional, but still.

Acknowledging anything is possible isn't the same thing as something being likely.

Question: Can the AHCA possibly pass without nuking the filibuster option?

This is normal. This is who the Republicans are. This is who they've been for a long, long time.

Like I said before. The rest of the world needs to treat the USA with hostility if theirs a Republican in the office of the Presidency.

Can't be trusted.

Honestly, and just speaking personally? I would not. Fucking. CARE. Nothing will EVER make up for what they have done, and nothing will ever convince me that they have become anything other than pure fucking evil incarnate, not even God Himself coming down from the fucking heavens and proclaiming to all the world that the Republicans have truly repented for their sins.

[up][up][up] I'm just being hopeful as my family taught me about life itself.

[up][up] It means a half chance in perhaps 5 years time if the GOP under Trump suffers lots of unpopularity.

I can't call that hopeful, Luigi. That's, as LSBK put, naively optimistic.

At this point, I'm not sure anything less than total destruction as a party will change the current GOP

I mean, the chances of the Republicans actually purging themselves of all of their toxic elements is slim to be generous, but if it we're to happen, I wouldn't hold the label against the new people.

Like, there's nothing intrinsic about them that means they have to be as vile as they are now. Without trying to actually defend their leadership or a lot of their base, that should go without saying.

[up]So basically that. If they manage to somehow implode and rebuild themselves up from the ashes, that should be considered a good thing. It's just not something particularly likely to happen right now, and assuming it does, will still take time.

sgamer82: Question: Can the AHCA possibly pass without nuking the filibuster option?

No; if it is filibustered, they'd need 60 votes, and they only have 52 Republicans in the Senate. The Democrats have 46, there are 2 Independents that lean Democrat, and all 48 of them are solid 'nos'.

Currently, it doesn't look like they even need to Filibuster; enough Senate Republicans have said 'no' to the AHCA that it has little chance of passing. Trump would need to twist their arms into voting for it, but Senators are less likely to kowtow to the President then the House is. They could make changes to the AHCA that would make it more votable in the Senate, but any changes to the AHCA in the Senate will force the House to vote for it again, and there are good odds that any change to the AHCA from the Senate will turn the Tea Party back off.

Luigisan98: What if they reform and remove all their traces of regressive actions?

They had their chance in 2012 to do that; they even 'autopsied' themselves and gave several good points that would make the Republicans more acceptable... The Party completely ignored it, doubled down on their Insanity that only appeals to Baby Boomers, and are now in this mess.

It's too late for the Republican Party, and people like Evan McMullins, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney are smart enough to see how bad the party has become and are actively leaving it. Only those desperate enough to hang onto power, or the Insane Baby Boomers themselves (like Trump), are staying Republican.

So, best case scenario, this is all mostly symbolic posturing by the House Republicans?

[up]A critical element of changing is wanting to change. Too many Republicans see what's happening as working for them to every consider that.

There's a difference between hope and blind optimism. The only way the Republicans would ever consider such reforms would be after a crushing loss. I'm talking "Democrats could unilaterally amend the Constitution" kind of loss. Merely getting put back in the minority would not discourage them. They'd just default to full blown obstructionism and bet on their voters not blaming them.
