Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Damn, I was sorta expecting it but that really sucks. But i'm still holding out hope that it won't pass the Senate, given how rocky the original was and the changes are worse.
But still, JUST as I was thinking Trump's presidency was gonna be a lot better than I thought...

Just another day in the life of Jimmy NutrinPeople whose lives are being legitimately threatened have every right to be freaking out.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.We can't bank on a Blue Wave, any more than I can bank on all my neighbours waking up tomorrow and realizing that voting Conservative has done nothing but screw them for decades.
I know I'm Canadian and not American, but whenever American tropers talk about how hopeless it is to be liberal in red rural districts, I feel sympathy pains, because that's exactly what it's like in the county I grew up in here, with people so archconservative I'm not sure they believe in flint. It's a district where the father of our current MPP once bragged that you could "paint a horse's ass blue and it'd be sure to win" (a reminder—in Canada, blue is Conservative, red is Liberal), and he wasn't wrong—his daughter, who has held her spot as long as I can remember, is utterly useless in Parliament but continues to win on her campaign of "I'm Bill's daughter". As time goes by we're only getting older and poorer, yet nothing changes politically. The only thing that trumps the area's conservatism is its xenophobia and insular nature; the one time the county went Liberal was when the Conservative leader lost his own district and they tried to parachute him into ours, where he lost because "he ain't from around here". As soon as Bill's daughter was running again, they voted the Liberals out and put her back in.
Having grown up with that attitude all around me, I find the idea that people who voted for Trump are suddenly going to go blue next year to be worthy of serious skepticism. It's also a big part of why I find the rhetoric of needing to reach out to the WWC or rural whites to be pretty questionable—I've been surrounded by these people all my life, and I've never seen change.
I hope there's a Blue Wave next year. I'll be watching with baited breath. But I'm not going to be surprised if things only get redder, grimmer, and poorer.

No offense taken, don't worry about that.
And I wouldn't say I'm freaking out, but I would say I am worried for me and my little brother (who also is Diabetic) and how our Futures are going to be kind of screwed up if this passes.
At least I've always wanted to get into Politics; If push comes to shove, I might have to work under a Republican to get Health Coverage, or move to a Democrat stronghold.

Sadly, I'm 23 right now; Since I have no desire to be a part of the Legislative process, the most I could do is run for Mayor, but Huntsville has an alright Mayor right now.
When I do actually run for anything, though, I'll let all you guys know somehow.

The thing that we need to do is make the the house members who voted, pay for it. It will send a message to the swing Senators who are probably watching closely to how the public will react to this.
See this thread for more reasoning and strategy

I'm seriously considering trying to get my younger brother to run for something someday. He was the uncrowned king of our high school, a beloved student athlete, deeply involved in the Church, and popular with basically everyone in our town. He's also so hard left he makes most of the posters in this thread, me included, look like members of the Club for Growth. He might actually have a shot, even in my lousy hometown.
As far as the expectation of a blue wave in 2018 goes, structural factors are strongly against the democrats in terms of congress; they have way more senators up for election, and the house is heavily gerrymandered. Governor's manors and state level offices on the other hand are looking to be far, far more competitive in 2018.
The problems Clinton had with manging her public image would affect me more or less threefold as an elected official. While Brutal Honesty (or at least the appearance of it) seems to play well in the current political environment, I doubt I'd be able to stop my own cynicism and depression from seeping into basically everything.
Not really particularly newsworthy honestly. The democrats doing something similar in the event of a major legislative victory wouldn't be especially surprising.

If I was to be a public servant, I'd HAVE to be a policy maker or analyst who actually researched and wrote the legislation in and of itself, and getting into the weeds with other wonks.
Fuck being in the public eye. I wouldn't be able to get shit done with constant attacks from the right wing's dogwhistles and fauxgressives who are so far left that they can only walk in circles.
New Survey coming this weekend!
x4 Considering Trump of all people won the Presidency, despite his temperament, and everything else, you might as well go for it if you ever really want to.
x5 Even a large blue wave at the state level is a good thing, although it'd be better in 2020 then 2018 because then they get to control the Redistricting. But I'm positive that the US House is going Blue. Trump and Congress's unpopularity should guarantee it going blue. People just need to vote.

The type of incremental, positive change you imagine moderate technocrats implementing is vaishingly rare in the actual history of lawmaking; generally it's one step forwards two step backwards when everything is quiet in Washington, or indeed in any other country's capital. The environment in which substantial changes are made is unfortunately one of crisis, and while that doesn't mean we should actively seek to exasperate crises, sometimes there's no other option but to brace for impact.
