Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Another Politico article
on Manchin, referencing his opposition to Trump's Obamacare repeal and how West Virginians "will know who took it away from them". 170 000+ people in West Virginia got healthcare thanks to Obama, and while they may not know that, they are, according to Manchin, aware of who is trying to strip it from them.
And a look at how the Republican Senate leadership will be upended by term limits
.
And a group of former military leaders and diplomats have formed a Nuclear Crisis Group
to try and educate the likes of Trump. Good luck to them; for some reason I doubt he's gonna listen.

For a bill to become law, it has to pass in identical forms in both House and Senate and be signed by the President.
It's on the Senate. And not a single Democrat, nor Angus King or Bernie will vote to break filibuster. The GOP has three options:
1. Let it die in Senate and send it back to the House
2. Nuke the filibuster for good and all.
3. Try to rally votes to break filibuster
I think perhaps the most accurate way to put it is that some republican politicians might have some semblance of scruples and decency, but the leadership and general ethos of the party as it stands now is horrendous and cartoonishly terrible.
I'm reminded of that one statement by Rand Paul where he said that the Republicans couldn't focus on some other issue (I'm sorry, I don't remember the details) because they were too focused on repealing Obaacare. Even though the majority of their constituents are not for it, and in fact are understandably not pleased with the idea that they won't be insured after it's gone.
In other words, they're putting their ideas, regardless of how terrible and unpopular they are, over the country, the people, and the future.
There's been speculation that the House vote would succeed primarily because they think it can't pass the Senate. They can look tough and properly conservative without actually taking the risk of the thing passing. Like the attempts to repeal the ACA under Obama

That's a darn shame that Trumpcare passed the House. Hopefully the Senate Republicans will hold and not allow it to pass. If push comes to shove, a Democrat will need to Filibuster and force 60 Votes on this terrible legislation, and they can't get to 60. Also, the CBO needs to get the new numbers with these Amendments to see how much worse the new AHCA is.
This quote seems relevant...

I've got Type 1 Diabetes, I'm in the same boat as you. It's even worse because I live in Alabama, which will almost certainly try to get rid of Protections for Pre-Existing Conditions. But I'm hopeful that the Senate, where Republicans have expressly said they do not support the AHCA in its current form, do not vote for it.
