The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It can't pass the Senate without Mitch killing the filibuster.

If he's stupid enough to do that, then...lol.

Imagine being such a soulless, inhuman waste of space that you are actively cheering for millions of people to lose their access to healthcare (and with it probably their lives) just so you don't have to pay taxes on assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Like, I love the US, but there is something deeply, deeply sick with that country. Even the Tories aren't this dedicated to bald-faced, cartoonish evil.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.

From Slate: The extents to which "undecided" Republicans are trying to hide their Trumpcare votes.

Maine Rep. Bruce Poliquin has yet to declare either his support or opposition for the bill. As he was walking out of the House Republican conference’s morning meeting Tuesday, I asked him if he had arrived at a decision. He said nothing and made a beeline to the restroom. Unfortunately it was the door to the women’s restroom that he had first run to, so he corrected himself and went into the men’s room. When he emerged several minutes later, he was wearing his earbuds and scurried away.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

Because Paul Ryan thought the GOP could stand to be more evil.

Guess what those $500 billion in budget cuts are going to target? Medicaid, Medicare, and food stamps! Paul Ryan's finally going to have a shot at enacting his Randian wet dreams.

So, the two hosts on MSNBC's Morning Joe are getting engaged, and Trump offered to officiate their wedding. Here's what Mika said in response to that.

"The White House that I grew up in was an amazing place," she said. "If it weren't Trump, it might be something to think about. The mental picture is just fascinating, but the reality is just — no. No, no, no, no, no

This is a great thread for what we should do if the AHCA passes in the house. It points out that the thing swing senators will be watching is the publication response to the Reps. that voted for it, so the thing that we have to do is make them pay a political price for it. We need to make it so voting for it would be political suicide.

So has it passed the house yet? I'm guessing it'll pass there, sadly.

No vote yet, and it's not a guarantee it passes there. It'll be a thin margin if they do succeed.

And even if it passes, they have to end filibuster in the Senate to get it through there.

[up][up] the republicans are plenty evil enough to kill the fillibuster so they can hurt poor people though. I'm going to stay reasonably pessimistic until proven otherwise.

@Tactical Fox

Great shot from Mika. Not sure how I feel about them getting hitched though. None of my business really I suppose, but I hope Joe treats her better IRL than he does on the show. The number of times that "Morning Joe" becomes "Mansplaining to Mika" has always depressed the hell out of me.

I've said it before, but since the Gorsuch vote, the fillibuster should be assumed dead unless proven otherwise. The Republicans have no qualms with removing it when it gets in their way, so if they think they can pass the AHCA 51-49, any attempt to fillibuster will be met with the full removal of the fillibuster.

What we really have to hope for is the Republicans being unable to muster 51 Senate votes to take health insurance away from 24 million Americans and further line the pockets of the 0.1%

The moment they remove the Filibuster for regular legislation is the moment Congress as an institution is effectively dead.

Meaning every time the party in power, they will just ram through legislation, and then the next party will ram through legislation to repeal it, and then the next will have to fix THAT fuck up, and so on.

I doubt even Hillary would've wanted that, if, by some miracle, she had won with a D/D/D set up

The filibuster was abused by the Republicans, but at least in theory it's there to help slow the passage of bad legislation, and in the past it has been used to do just that. Removing it makes the passage of terrible legislation all together too easy. Much as I hated watching Republicans filibuster various Democratic proposals, I don't want it gone.

How is the Tuesday Group reacting to the modified AHCA? They previously said the pre-existing conditions were a red line for them, and the loop hole provided might not be enough for at least some of them.

[up][up], [up][up][up] sadly it seems this congress doesn't particularly care what their constituents think-this is going to go down as a deeply undemocratic and corrupt era in us history provided we survive it.

Pretty much impossible now. Too polarized. We don't like are parties being in control for too long. They would've also needed federal gerrymandering laws, AND for the Supreme Court to uphold them. And considering how many swing districts would be made from neutral gerrymandering, it would've been a moot point anyhow.

One-Party-State can't happen.

Washington Post: Trump limits IRS action over church political activity

So guys, I'm currently a non-practicing Lutheran. If I were to begin worshiping regularly again, would I fit in with the rest of the religious conservatives?

What are they anyways? Baptists? I know Betsy De Vos actually comes from a long line of Calvinists.
