The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Just in case you were not already shaking with rage [1]: Under the bill, preexisting conditions can be denied, a term that is now expanded to pregnancy, C-sections, domestic violence, and rape. They just made 'being a person, especially a woman' a preexisting condition so you don't get insurance, period.

CALL YOUR CONGRESSMEN, because mine do not listen.

It's bad.

The only one out of that that makes any sense whatsoever (and even then, just barely, if you look at it sideways) is the C-section one. And that's mostly because once a woman has a c-section, she's more likely to need one in the future if she becomes pregnant again. Still awful though. And the others are just insane. Like pregnancy, you know, ends. It has a pretty defined time-frame. And being pregnant once doesn't guarantee pregnancy a second time.

But yeah, this is all boiling down to "you don't deserve health insurance unless you're an absurdly healthy man who has never been attacked physically. Seriously, why is domestic violence on there? That's going right into "how dare you get beat up!" territory there.

And apparently putting domestic violence on there was too subtle a fuck you to women, so they put rape on the list just for good measure.

I'm a woman with several pre-existing conditions, including being alive, apparently, who would suffer under this hellish bill.

There is still the possibility of the vote being pulled; I remember how the last time there was going to be a vote, the discussion over the bill itself actually made Republicans who were For the Bill go Against it, combined with the calls.

People have to call, especially those who have Tuesday Group and Neocon Representatives. If you live in Michigan, you need to call Fred Upton, and if you live in Missouri, you need to call Billy Long. These 2 were originally against the bill, but were convinced by a Promise of an additional $8 Billion in "High-Risk Pools" for those with Pre-Existing Conditions to go Yes, and that's what triggered this Vote. If you live in Michigan or Missouri, please call these representatives and tell them this is a bad idea.

The only positive is the Bill in its current form has little chance of getting 51 votes in the Senate, but who knows what lengths Trump will go to to get them. We need to kill this thing in the House, and we need to do it Tomorrow. Again, I highly recommend anyone living in New York to Contact Chuck Schumer and threaten to get the Dems to shut down the Government if they vote for this Legislation. Yes, it will only delay the vote and not kill it, but it's better then nothing.

I feel like trying force a government shutdown over this would just do more harm than good. True, it's not nearly the same as when Republicans did it, but it'll still be made out as such.

Yes, and we all saw how badly the voters punished them for that?

Not to encourage evil or anything, but the parties seem to hold themselves to completely different standards.

I was trying to think of a way to describe this, and I think I found it. It's fucking barbaric. It's been clear for a while that the Republican leadership flatly don't care about the people of the US. But this, this is straight up evil. Especially when you combine it with what they say. "Being a mother is the most important thing you can be", but if you have the nerve to have a kid, you don't deserve healthcare. If you've had post-partum depression, which is fucking awful, you don't deserve healthcare.

These things are transparently designed to punish women, but not just women, victimized women.

These people will claim they're doing it in the name of God and Jesus if you ask them. I think I can say that these people are taking the name of God in vain, and God isn't the entity they're working for.

Just a general question, would it be worth it to send calls/letters/emails to my Representative/Senator(s) if they're all Democrats? The only Republican in the chain of authority below Trump himself in my case is my State Assembly rep, the rest are all Democrats.

They need to know that people care about what they do in the congress.

I think the public, in general, holds the two to different standards, which is why Dems would probably be more likely to suffer for it.

It's worth contacting any representatives you have regardless of if they'll insult you, are on the fence, are against it, etc...

If you're for it you're still putting on pressure, a number of Republicans are running scared, worst case scneeiro you do nothing but you could end up forcing them on the defensive over this. If you've got a Rep who is against it then they need to know that they have our backing for their no vote, additionally you can ask them to put pressure on other members of Congress.

Remember all these people work together, they lobby internally amongst themselves and even if all you're doing is enabling your Rep to go to another Rep and say "I got X number of calls telling me that this bill sucks" you're still helping, in the end there's people talk to each other and listen to each other. While you can't put pressure on Reps who don't represent you your Rep can put pressure on said Reps.

Yes, absolutely. You should call and thank them for the wonderful job they are doing. It's tough being a democrat in Washington right now, and they need all the encouragement they can get.

I contacted my congressman and senator to ask them to vote against this monstrosity of a bill.
