Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Over here you generally have two types of responses to Nazi demonstrations.
Counter-Demonstrations, aiming to basically take their route/end spot away from them by bigger numbers.
The Antifa who deliberately puts themselves in the way of the Nazis in order to provoke a fight.
More often then not this only ends up making the latter A Lighter Shade of Black. Especially when they start talking about bringing down the state in favor of socialism now and by force because 'this time we're getting it right, people' and want to drag everyone along with them if they want or not. Antifa is usually the radical end of the left fringe and the only reason they are counted among the good guys is that its technically in a continuous Enemy Mine with the rest of us against the Nazis.

"You can reply to this Message!"They tend to like provoking Trump supporters into fights more but some of them do get violent first which can completely tarnish a protest. That's definitely a problem.
What happened with the firecrackers? I didn't hear about that.
Yep, I can agree with this.

Tbf, that's debatable. Can you actually call Venezuela a real democracy under Hugo Chavez?
I believe antifa is made up of anarchists or mostly anarchists not socialists.
That's one problem with anarchists is that they can't work with the the system like socialists can. Socialism, for the most part, preaches a gradual change with the government's help whereas anarchists want to destroy the system as fast as possible.

I assume you mean Maduro? Chávez is a little too dead atm.
Hugo Chávez did pull a similar stunt back when he was in power. Yeah, the legislature still had to ratify any changes he wanted to make, but that was a moot point since most of them were his supporters at the time.
He also tried to remove his term limits via referenda. The first one failed, and he let it slide for a couple years before trying again. If that second one hadn't passed (it did) he probably wouldn't have waited even two years.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI'd remind people that Anarchism doesn't mean chaos, it's meant to mean a society without hierarchy, or at least one with a minimalist hierarchy.
So no, not every anarchist wants to tear society down, some just want more direct democracy, more involvement of the people in the process of making laws, more involvement of everyone in management.
You can't go full Anarchism the same way you can't go full Communism, but you can try and bring forward some of the principles.

I figured the answer to the health reform question was "OBAMA BAD!!!"

No, the reason they're trying to rush the repeal-and-replace strategy is that they plan to use budget reconciliation to bypass a Senate Democrat filibuster, and there are some very picky rules about how they can do that.

I don't know what to say for this. I can't get my head around that someone would say this.
(Sorry for the double post, but I think this warranted it's own)
However reprehensible that sort of thing may be, I don't know why it surprises anyone.
Trump doesn't know or care what's in the new healthcare bill, he only wants a "win".
He's so desperate to out-Obama Obama that he's making tons of calls trying to get a bill that he may have never even read passed.
