Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Nah she's the one trying to dial back that rhetoric. She is a doctor. But she's doing it in that half-assed dogwhistle way that is meant to avoid alienating people with those views. Basically No, Except Yes.
It's the rest of the Green Party that believes crap like this and worse.
Do you think homeopathy is something that should receive federal funding? No? Then the Green Party isn't the party for you.
Don't think for a second that Stein isn't short a few screws either. She thinks Wifi gives people cancer and is terrified of nuclear power plants.

Disgusted, but not surprisedJill Stein acted as the Mask of Sanity for the Green Party.
Think about that.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIf you aren't convinced of the Green Party's pure quackery, just look into Stein's running mate from last year. He made her look like Harris or Warren by comparison.
The Greens take in people who cross lines the Democrats won't tolerate, like anti-science, rabid anti-interventionism (that goes into Gabbard style apologist rhetoric), animal liberation and so forth. People like Sanders and Warren can do well for themselves in Democratic circles, its the crazies who are thrown out the door and sent to the Greens.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Wait, how is vote splitting a thing in California, doesn't it operate a jungle primary system? That means that as long as either a Democrat or a member of the CNP get into the second round you're fine.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranBecause too many candidates in the first round can mean the opposition gains both top two places and thus a guaranteed seat. See the 2016 Senatr election and a few House elections. It's a fairly common thing.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanOn Monday, as the pro-labor, anti-Trump rally in Oregon descended into violence, Portland police tweeted that demonstrators had started hurling objects including full Pepsi cans at officers.
Shortly later the protest’s permit was revoked and police moved in to shut it down. Three people were arrested.
Nice going, Pepsi. You escalated it.
Also someone tweeted an image of a protester holding out a Pepsi can to one of the officers.

I don't think this was the publicity they needed.
And I checked out the anarchist reddit sub-forum to see what they're saying about this.
And I was surprised that they had pretty nice ideals with mostly nice people. That's good. Didn't realize they were so socially progressive either.
Some of them are a tad too prone to getting violentally angry but compared to the alt-right, they're angels.

It's not too surprising to me. Anarchism is a very idealistic school of thought- the basic premise is that things will work out for the best if we just get rid of all rules- that once you get rid of all corrupt institutions, you'll have gotten rid of everything preventing people from just getting along.
It's an ideology that requires you to have a hell of a lot of faith in the basic goodness of human nature if you want to be able to seriously argue in favour of it.

Anarchism and socialism have the exact same bug - they expect everyone to play by the rules, and have no contingency plans for the occasion when someone doesn't.
Flip the sequence around, and there you have it. Can't find anything better than mass market swill right now, and I don't have the money either.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotYou're thinking of communism which is somewhat similar to anarchism.
Socialism has a different bug.

Different forms of socialism have different endpoints.
Democratic Socialism, some argue, is supposed to end with a socialist economy and a democratic government.
Jeremy Corbyn, Helen Keller, George Orwell, Bernie Sanders, Albert Einstein, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and MLK Jr. were/are all Democratic Socialists.

Let's just remember that it's antifa guys that decided to set off firecrackers in the middle of that protest against Yiannappolous. They may be nice over the internet, but they're not exactly the kind of people who are down with peaceful protest. And that brings danger into already tense situations.

Georgia city votes to limit cooperation with ICE
The new policy, which took effect immediately, says city authorities shall not arrest or detain anyone based on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement requests called “detainers” or “administrative immigration warrants.”
The council’s decision follows the arrests of scores of unauthorized immigrants across Georgia this year, including many Somali nationals in Clarkston this month. Clarkston’s decision also come as President Donald Trump is seeking to strip federal funding from “sanctuary cities” that don’t fully cooperate with ICE. Last week, a federal judge in California temporarily blocked a key part of Trump’s executive order that would withhold the money.
“It’s more of a symbolic measure,” Clarkston Mayor Ted Terry said in an interview after the vote. “Practically speaking, we are not going to hold anyone for longer than a couple of hours in a holding cell before they get transferred to the De Kalb jail. But people in the community were fearful, and there were lots of very moving stories.”
