Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Dare I ask why and under what circumstances that sentence got said?

Huh. And natural selection didn't kick in yet?
@Zendervai: Seems like it might be, considering that Riverside County - comparatively off the beaten track - seems to sustain net immigration in Southern California. Although from what I know, too many restrictions on new housing and undue focus on low income housing are the proncipal problems.

I saw a headline that Pence was part of the vetting, but the source seemed to biased to take a closer look.

That's a little Right for the Wrong Reasons, isn't it? Good he's missing attention, but for things like better formed tweets

And he blamed Obama for Flynn as well. The man cannot take responsibility.
Trump claims that the "High-Risk Pools" created in the AHCA will protect people with Pre-Existing Conditions. However, he also says that Insurance Companies would not be allowed to deny or overcharge people with Pre-Existing Conditions, and that the AHCA is still 'evolving'.
So, it sounds like the MacArthur Amendment (the one that would let States screw over people with Pre-Existing Conditions) is dead in the water, and that would mean that the Teapublicans will go back to being against the AHCA.
Sounds like Obamacare will stay the law of the land. As someone with Pre-Existing Conditions (Type 1 Diabetes), that is good for me.
That's why I'm hoping it's not just because of Grammar, but because people are just getting tired of listening to his (ultimately worthless) tweets.

Take a look at a map of Southern California and a lot of those city names are basically glorified suburbs for places like LA or Long Beach.
Septimus mentioned Riverside, which I have to pass constantly. Everyday I see development of new housing blocks. Almost all of them are large two story single family houses that are annoyingly far from anyplace their inhabitants would actually work.
Trump invited Duterte to the White House without telling anyone: http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/331319-trump-invited-duterte-to-white-house-without-telling-state-department#
So, at the Pennsylvania rally
, Trump read out the lyrics to a song from 1968, 'The Snake', as a metaphor for how illegal immigrants are taking the US border for a ride (he stopped in the middle of reading out the lyrics just to make sure everyone knew he was talking about the border).
The funniest thing for me, is that he's reading out the lyrics of a song that was sung by an African-American (Al Wilson), and the lyrics were inspired by the Aesop's Fable, 'The Farmer and the Viper' as a moral about someone who sells out their own country to the enemy... the very opposite of the point Trump is trying to make... but very appropriate the Russian allegations being made about Trump himself.
I wonder whose bright idea it was to show him the lyrics and get him to read them out (because the way he stops in the middle to explain to his audience what the lyrics mean suggests someone had to tell him how to interpret them in the first place).
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. No, but as I was saying, there are policies in place prohibiting them. The ban on increasing property taxes is also insane, and a perfect example of what I am talking about. Present owners of the housing stock vote in politicians that do things that increase the monetary value of their houses. No matter how bad those policies are for society as a whole.
This is a malaise that afflicts really depressing amounts of the first world, and people most often do not even see that it is a problem - because housing prices going up is good news, right? No. It is a symbol of generational and class warfare of the economic kind. If most of your income is your house increasing in value that is not you "earning" or "saving", it is just straight up a transfer of money from your childrens generation to you.
Take condos in cali. Those are not permitted by zoning in most of these places. Because they would actually satisfy the demand for housing in the best locales. And that would mean lower prices - The marginal buyer in a hot locale is dot-com money that do not actually care about having a garden, but do care a whole lot about having a short commute. (because if you are working 50 hour weeks, and have to drive an hour an a half a day on top of that? You die. More importantly, your productivity dies too. .)

I suspect that there's also the issue fo infrastructure, what's California's rail system like? You can spread your housing out over a much wider area if you have decent transport links into the areas where the jobs are. But again that will promote construction further out and thus reduce housing prices across the board, which would upset home owners.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI don't think California has much of a passenger rail system, apart from selected cities. Entirely reliant on car traffic, with all the unwanted things that come with that.
Izeinsummer, not sure if condos are outright banned but yes approving new housing seems to be a nightmare down there. There are over a hundred bills in their legislature under discussion for the issue, one of which wold suspend the authority of local communities to regulate development if they don't meet targets; let's hope it passes.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIt's not the first time he's read that song's lyrics. A few days ago I shared a video doing Trump's life as if he was Pink from Pink Floyd's
The Wall , and around Waiting For The Worms (I believe, it might have been during the intro to In The Flesh, actually), there's a voiceover of Trump reading it.
California's current mass transit system (or lack thereof) was lampshaded in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Of course, the movie was set in a fictional version of 1947, where Rule of Cool trumped Anachronism Stew.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Trump is considering amending or abolishing the 1st Amendment: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/priebus-trump-considering-amending-or-abolishing-1st-amendment
Good luck with that. If the Republicans couldn't even get behind abolishing Obamacare, what makes him think they will get behind abolishing Freedom of Speech? That's not even getting into the riots and domestic terrorism that would result from that...

There's also the fact that he needs the states behind him for that, and there are enough Democrats and Republicans with some sanity in Governor's mansions/state legislatures to stop that easily. And even starting the process would cost the GOP dearly in political backlash.
