The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up] Sorry about the above post, got a bit out of control there, but this whole North Korea thing is pissing me off. How dare the Americans put the lives of South Koreans and Japanese at risk!

[up][up] Seeing the picture of the polar bear costume, I can't help but think they missed an opportunity to have the polar bear with the broken dick bone from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

How's that for a page topper?

Trump is apparently in Pennsylvania speaking at a rally. How did he get out of the White House without all the environmentalists there noticing? Apparently Pence spoke briefly, stating illegal immigration is down 60% this year, and Pence also mentioned Trump has started to turn America around and that he's just getting started.

[up][up] Thing is that'swhat most of us here are afraid of.

Why does it say 2 months then switch to first 100 days? Those are not even remotely the same thing.

[up][up][up][up] Maybe he wasn't in the White House at all? Alternatively, there may be a secret tunnel leading from the White House to a hidden exit point far from said building that is normally used in emergencies (e.g. impending assault by an invading enemy nation).

[up]Yeah, it goes to the Treasury building across the street. Our secret tunnels aren't so secret, you see.

[up]If they're not so secret, then why are they called secret tunnels? Or are they just called that to make everyone feel important?

[up][up][up][up][up]Even if it is technically accurate, Obama became president during the middle of the housing crash and the Great Recession and such. It's really not a fair comparison.

Even without that, prescribing any job growth or loss to any president during such a short amount of time, seems ridiculous.

Yeah. I was just thinking anything like that within the first few months/hundred days of a Presidency have more to do with the predecessor than anyone.

The whole 100 days thing is just arbitrary and symbolic. Which is probably why Trump is subscribing so much importance to it; flash without the substance is his thing.

[up][up]That's kind of the point, they're trying to paint the job losses caused by the Recession as a failure of Obama as president.

Yeah, the numbers they're showing are probably more indicative of the last president's tenure than the current one. edit: Having said that, I want to point out that if Obama is in the lead on this chart if you look at jobs added directly in the wake of their term.
