The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He also apparently killed South Korea's stock market with his idiocy. I think he just made both Koreas antagonize the US.

[up][up]The real tragedy is that his voters are overjoyed. If that letter's anything to go by, Trump's antics are him "being a tough real AmericanTM."

South Korea can't legally detain US troops due to the SOFA they signed decades ago.

Trump is still learning tic-tac-toe while the rest of the world is playing 4 dimensional chess.
On the contrary, because he can't play chess, he's forcing the the rest of the world to play tic-tac-toe with him.

Take the recent NAFTA spat for example. Word gets out that Trump's planning to announce the US leaving NAFTA on his 100th day. Immediately, the Presidents of Mexico and Canada contact him directly, and we see the shift to talks of "renegotiation."

I think there's good reason to believe this is a deliberate strategy, bluffing in order play at being the boss man. But I also think there's good reason to believe that he genuinely wanted to chalk up some "accomplishment" without any regard for the consequences. And that he genuinely wants to be pampered and fawned over by other leaders, like the simpering attention-whore he has consistently proven himself to be.

Hopefully, in any future negotiation, other parties will know that they cannot expect any good faith from the United States.

Guess who's back? Milo's back. Tell a friend.

Milo Yiannopoulos, the former tech editor at Breitbart, has made political provocations, often deeply offensive ones, a business model. But his career seemed to come crashing down in recent months when one of his speaking appearances, at the University of California, Berkeley, led to riots. Weeks later, videos emerged of Yiannopoulos seeming to condone pedophilia. (“I do not support pedophilia. Period. It is a vile and disgusting crime, perhaps the very worst,” Yiannopoulos said in a statement on Facebook at the time.)

Yet his allies turned on him. Yiannopoulos was subsequently forced out of Breitbart in disgrace. The American Conservative Union disinvited him from CPAC, and Simon & Schuster canceled a six-figure book deal.

But as the free-speech conflagration he ignited at Berkeley continues to burn, Yiannopoulos is planning a way back in. Days after releasing a video touting his return to the campus, Yiannopoulos told the Hive that he would be launching a new media venture in the coming weeks with what he says is a $12 million investment from backers whose identities he is protecting. (Yiannopoulos showed me a page from the contract with the investors' names blacked out.) Another person involved with the company, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, was similarly secretive: "Milo has the best instincts about these things," he said.

The business, which will be called Milo Inc., will be even more focused on stoking the sort of ugly political conflict that's closer to the surface than ever in these early months of the Trump administration. As Fox News remains busy with its latest scandal, Milo Inc. promises to be the latest incumbent in a growing far-right media sphere that is overwhelmingly populated with politically incorrect, and often jarring, provocations once considered verboten by conservatives. Yiannopolos will compete not only against sites such as The Blaze and Alex Jones's Infowars but also against his very own former employer, Breitbart, which has become a formidable force in the space after its former chairman, Steve Bannon, helped usher Trump to victory and later joined his administration. Yiannopoulos, for his part, is relying on a formula that he employed at Breitbart. He said that Milo Inc. would be dedicated to “making the lives of journalists, professors, politicians, feminists, Black Lives Matter activists, and other professional victims a living hell.”

Initially, Yiannopolos will be the company's main talent. “I’m the proof of concept,” he said, but added that he hoped to eventually expand the company. “The thing about me is that I have access to a talent pipeline that no one else even knows about. All the funniest, smartest, most interesting young YouTubers and all the rest of them who hate feminism, who hate political correctness. This generation that’s coming up, it’s about 13, 14, 15, now have very different politics than most other generations. They love us. They love me, and I’m going to be actively hunting around for the next Milo.”

Ugh.

[up][up][up] Great. Like I needed more reasons to think the generation that came after mine is as dumb as a sack of hammers. Like it wasn't bad enough that their popular music and books sucked worse than most of my generation's, they just had to dive headlong into sociopathy and fascism on top of that.

That's the point. The less they give a shit, the better.

For people like Milo, actually caring about politics, civics, society, or other people is a joke. Weaponized "srs business."

What happened to make some members of this generation so easily radicalized?
I would contend the same that happened to millenials. The rise of new media: making politics less impenetrable, "friends" from outside the neighborhood more accessible, and putting razor focus on the mistakes of the previous generations (who are conflated with office holders). Makes justifying going "my own way" much easier.
The major difference is that millenials grew up in the Obama Era or previously when inclusion, tolerance, etc were the hot topics. The Trump Era produced different kinds of celebrities and tis the nature of celebrities to have some following somewhere and the nature of youth to seek experiences. Stir and you get your poisoned soup.

That still doesn't mean [whatever the next generation's name is] are lost causes. Even among millenials, the generation is far from uniform, and the next generation will likely grow up in a polity where LGBT persons are mainstream, health care is a basic right, and, if we screw up, will only ever know the US president as a buffoon but what fun is perfection?

@Milo: based on his previous statements and such, didnt he pretty much say that he is looking for a kid to molest? because thats what i got from his rant.

Which rant? The pro-paedophilia (?) one? See, my impression was he was talking about himself as a teenager.

He implied that the pedophilia was a good thing for him which carries the implicit assumption that it wouldn't be terrible if it happened to other kids.

It was implied very heavily that he got molested as a teenager or younger so he thought it was okay for older men to molest teenagers or younger.

Really fucked up when you think about it I know but thats still not something that should reach young impressionable kids or people in general. Especially if they have been in or are in that situation....

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the economic expectations of The '90s combined with the economic reality of The Noughties helped fuel the rise in sex-deprived twentysomethings. Who, as we know, fueled the rise of the alt-right as soon as they realized that they can't be punched in the face over the internet.

Wait, are we really discussing why kids these days are the worst generation ever?

News flash, guys. "Kids these days" have always been the worst generation ever. Fifty years ago it was hippies and stoners instead of edgelords and internet trolls. Same shity, different decade.
