Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And another reason to hope: Trump's election has actually caused many states to ramp up their renewable energy targets, and most attacks have failed.

Another reason to hope. Everything we have done in the last 100 days to demonstrate the true principals of American democracy.

The Orange House lets the Pentagon adjust troop levels in Iraq and Afghanistan themselves.
Carl von Clausewitz? Never heard of him.
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies. And please tell the EPA that you are opposed to rolling back regulations. It is vital that they don't as they help protect our environment and public health.
Chobani lawsuit against InfoWars: Standing up for the truth about Idaho and company
More of an editorial, but the latest on the InfoWars/Chobani situation. Interestingly, if reading correctly, the Republican governor and Idaho Falls representative seem to be lining behind Chobani's owner

What does Clausewitz have to do with that?

One of the things Clausewitz stresses a lot in Vom Krieg is that letting the military essentially 'run itself' is pointless, because only civilian leaders can set the strategic results that the military can achieve. In a situation where the military can entirely govern its own affairs, there are no strategic aims, and thus the war, by definition, cannot be won.
Put differently, the politician is the means by which tactical and operational victory becomes strategic gains. Without that translation, you can fight all you want, but you'll never win a conflict.
(Paraphrasing somewhat - it's a bigger argument about the role of war in policy and politics, but it's part of the essential point.)

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies. What we're arguing against is Mad Skillz's insistence that centrist-by-his-standards politicians like Obama and Clinton are evilbadwrong Wall Street stooges, while acceptable-to-him politicians like Sanders and Warren are heroic outsiders fighting the good fight.
Speaking of, back from this post
(a response to my post here
):
Complaining because candidate X takes money from organization Y is pure guilt by association. It doesn't mean anything. Funding proves nothing, positions actually taken proves everything.
You spend an enormous amount of time looking at people's associations and very little looking at their actual positions. You think Obama was too soft on Wall Street? That's fine. That's a reasonable position to hold. We can debate the interplay of policy priorities (what you want to accomplish), realpolitik (what you can accomplish), and legislative savvy (how closely your results match your intentions) all you like. There are reasonable discussions to be had there, even if we don't agree.
But going "WALL STREET MONEY! CORPORATE PUPPET! EVILBADWRONG!!" just by pointing at some campaign contributions adds nothing to the conversation and reeks of arbitrary purity tests.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Quickly changes topic
Donald Trump is on a twitter rant today. It's incohearently blaming the democrats for everything. I don't think he was expecting this presidenting thing to be so hard
I particularly like this one for it's Politics! Interjection at the end.
"I promise to rebuild our military and secure our border. Democrats want to shut down the government. Politics!"
3 out of 7 end with a one word exclaimation point.

This most of them were just stupid, but this one made me mad.
"As families prepare for summer vacations in our National Parks - Democrats threaten to close them and shut down the government. Terrible!"
Don't pretend you care.

His own fucking party has a majority in Congress. If he can't get shit done even with an advantage like that...
Maybe if he spent more time in the Oval Office and less time on the golf course...
If it were up to him, there won't be any parks left for families to visit. Oh wait, it is up to him. Shit.

Disgusted, but not surprisedA competent machine driven by Trump and the GOP would do incalculable damage, and probably destroy the country. The fact that American conservatives are legendarily stupid is probably our strongest lifeline — there's always a way back when the enemy knows nothing.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Since we're on the topic of Twitter: Adam Schiff was on Conan the other night. Mostly he talked about his role in the Russian investigation, but towards the end of the interview he made a request to Ivanka, Melania, Jared, etc.: Take away Trump's Twitter privileges.
Seriously, if Twitter isn't going to ban him for posting inflammatory material that causes stocks to rise and fall at a moment's notice, his own family members could take him to task.
Hell, he could use it to his advantage. He could be asked about his sudden halt of using Twitter and be like, "I have more important things to do, like MAGA!"
