Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Fox News Hit With New Racial Discrimination Lawsuit
. First Ailes, then O'Reilly, then Hannity, now FOX itself, I hope this is the start of the Murdoch Empire collapsing.
Speaking of that, this Keith Olbermann video is worth a listen.
Trump is officially retreating
from his threat to shut down the government over funding for his wall. Republican have introduced a new plan to bargain over with Democrats that pointedly does not include any money for Trump's wall.
You know, in an odd way, this whole fiasco that is President Trump is actually restoring some of my faith in the system. Everyone was scared as hell at what Trump would do once elected, and yet thanks to what a buffoon he is, whatever his own party doesn't stop in the name of self-preservation is largely being blocked in the courts thanks to how incompetently it's being implemented.
That's not to say he hasn't done any damage, obviously. Just look at recent foreign policy, such as there is and what there is of it. But for reasons ideal and cynical, a lot of Trump's antics are being curtailed and, as a bonus, making him look ineffectual which he's sure to hate.
I know a lot of people will say "Oh, you're just being blindly patriotic" or something along those lines, but I really do think that our Founding Fathers were some of the smartest men to ever live (at least in the 1700's); They devised a Republic-style system that is so complicated that it's almost impossible for a dictatorship to form without immense backlash from the system.
You may say "Oh, it's just because Trump is an idiot", but considering all the Political Geniuses we've actually had run our Government, I don't even think a Smart man could make a Dictatorship out of the United States.

Kind of Tempting Fate there although I tend to agree. That being said, if the system worked both in terms of mechanisms and the "good faith of the American people", Trump probably wouldn't be President in the first place. I know there's a lot of discussion of individualized factors in the campaigns, but I'd point to the use of gerrymandering and voter suppression as doing a lot over the last decades to undermine democracy working as it is supposed to and for increasing polarization.

Trump's Tax cut of 20% would destroy Reconciliation,
which would mean that Trump's budget would require 60 Votes from the Senate to pass.
Barring some shenanigans like moving the time window (to a time where Democrats could destroy it), or cutting Taxes through Tax Reform, Trump ain't cutting Taxes by 20%.

GOP Proposes Stripping Pre-existing Conditions Ban, Except for Members of Congress
Republican legislators liked this policy well enough to offer it in a new amendment. They do not, however, seem to like it enough to have it apply to themselves and their staff. A spokesperson for Rep. Tom Mac Arthur (R-N.J.) who authored this amendment confirmed this was the case: members of Congress and their staff would get the guarantee of keeping this Obamacare regulations

New Survey coming this weekend!Like I'm sure I can find Captain Planet villains with more nuance and depth than the current GOP.

Hell, I am sure you could find Captain Planet villains I would be willing to vote for over the GOP.

“God bless Ted Cruz for that one,” Merkley says.
