Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

They're already counting the votes (you can check here if you want
) Ossof is currently leading with 60.6% of the vote (equals 33,862 votes) and the turnout is at normal midterm levels.
Well, I've said what I needed to say.
Elizabeth Warren is the bomb. From the article: "Warren tells All Things Considered that she sees Trump's rise as part of a larger narrative of economic inequality in this country. She argues that the government's lack of investment in the middle class created the conditions "where Donald Trump could deliver the knockout blow."
and ""Look, let's be blunt. Democrats have not always been on the right side of these arguments," she says, "and frankly Democrats have not indicated always a willingness to wade in and actually to fight for the people who need it."
Well.
Another book I can strongly recommend is "The Next American Civil War: The Populist Revolt Against the Liberal Elite"
by written by Lee Harris in 2012. Harris is not himself a conservative, but he tries to understand conservatives in their own terms. Reading it now, it seems almost prescient.
"...what is Harris’ explanation of why these people, these conservative stalwarts and tea-party members, are so extreme in some of their views? “But they all have one highly conspicuous quality in common. They don’t like other people telling them what to do… These are people that might be best dubbed “natural libertarians”. They may never have read a single piece of the classic libertarian literature. They may never have even heard of John Locke or John Stuart Mill, but they have instinctively adopted Thomas Paine’s maxim that “government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil.” To such people, there is nothing so odious or obnoxious than a government whose attitude is “Don’t worry, we know what is best for you””
and “The Obama death panel is a myth- but it is a myth that expresses a genuine anxiety that decisions over our lives and deaths could one day end up being made for us and not by us. It is not enough to simply discredit the myth, which is relatively easy; it is necessary to address the underlying anxiety, which is much more difficult, since the source of this anxiety is the well founded fear of the little guy that those who wield power over him will not be inclined to use it for his benefit."
It's well worth a read. And as for myself:
"The point is not whether this view of things is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’- the degree of historical revisionism involved here is obvious. The right-wing populist revolt is clearly much more a product of the feelings of ordinary people in response to traumatic social changes rather than driven by an ideology."

President H.W. Bush has been hospitalized with pneumonia.

x4 (mostly paraphrasing Nate Cohn from NYT's upshot here) Most of the vote's currently counted come from Cobb county, which is the "Republican stronghold" of the district, the other two counties could still carry him to the top (and the other Democratic candidates add up to 0.9%, so if he gets over 49% but under 50% he's got an assured win)

Continue writing our story of peace.Seems like things turned into a real brouhahaha while I was at work. There's a few things I'd love to respond to, but since the convo has moved on, I'll leave it for the moment.
Fingers crossed for Ossof, even if I think he's got a snowball's chance.
@Mad Skillz
Sanders' lakehouse is not a problem for anyone sane. What Krieger is saying, however, is that it should have been a problem for the lunatic elements of his fanbase who tried to decry "insert Democrat here" as a member of the whatever percent and therefore unable to represent "the people". That they have no issue with it is evidence of the problems with their positions.

We may have the verbal shots fired of the North American trade war on our hands. After Trump singled out Canadian diary (the US has a massive advantage in terms of volume and weaker quality regs, reflected in the trade balance) and the Canadian ambassador called him on it.

What concerns are those? There was a legitimate problem with her giving people realistic answers that they rejected because it's not what they wanted to hear.
