Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What a shock—the Treasury Department is easing the sanctions on Russia.
Who could have possibly seen that coming.
McCain? Shouldn't this be your cue to start making a fuss? You promised to stop him from doing that, after all.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."@Democrats will rig elections if they get back into power: I mean that's probably technically true. If we switch to popular voting and nonpartisan congressional districts it probably would tilt things to favor Dems. Of course you could easily argue that it would just be rebalancing the skills after the GOP rigged them to begin with.

Oh, and the Duma were celebrating the easing of sanctions hours before Congress was even notified.
But I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for that.
That's not rigging, though. That's just a level playing field.

Freakin' Traitor.
(And I page topped. Basically, Trump Admin eased Russian Sanctions
hours after the Russians celebrated it
. He's a god damned Traitor.)

They already sold out. Mc Cain tried to rationalize it but it's all just politician speak for "I had to fall in line because the people at the party were looking at me funny".

When in fact we're the one who are trying desperately to save it.
While the guy who's going to "Make Amurrica Grate Agin!" is actually going to dismantle the government for parts, throw civil society into chaos, ruin the planet, and probably start World War 3.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Guys, is there any source collecting RT's examples of hypocrisy and self-contradiction? I mean, that's their one favorite accusation against Western powers. Worldwide, "anti-imperialists" adore them for it, and swallow the pro-Russian propaganda alongside that. It would be nice to summon a tu quoque repository.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. That's exactly it though. Their version of America (whether they're conscious of it or not) is some idealized, saccharine version of the 50's where black people were out of sight and "knew their place", it was safe to hate gays, women were homemakers, they didn't have to meet anyone different from them and America "ruled the world". Any attempt to point out the problems with that ridiculous farce is met with basically "well it was good for me so fuck you".
The Republican party is all about capitalizing on people's perception and desire to return to that era, in spite of the fact that it's never going to be possible. And maybe on some level they know that, but they just want to put their boot on the faces of people they hate out of spite anyways.

The Handle: StopFake
has a good collection of articles on how RT manufactures "truth". The Rationalwiki.org
page has some good examples as well.

I was just thinking yesterday what's been going on feels like Civ 6 right after launch.
"America has just denounced Mexico."
"America has just denounced China."
"America has just denounced Germany."
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."
