Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Saw this in the news. Don't know if it's discussed here.
Sorry to bring this back up, but you have no idea what you're talking about. Consider Italy, who has largely got off scot-free and was admitted into NATO or Japan - which had some really bad atrocities going on - turn into a post-war economic miracle (admittedly after some American occupation).
Poland, by comparison, is a Second World, at best. Being thrown away to the Soviet Bear no doubt helped, but the war has totalled the country and culled the population to a horrifying degree. Pray that U.S Annexation of Canada remains a Fallout backstory.
@Fruitpork: The government can claim imminent domain for public works projects like this. Now, obviously this would tie things up in court for at least several months, but hoo boy have there been plenty of instances of workers just bulldozing people's property before anything is settled anyway.
Also, even if this does go off without a hitch, how can anyone seriously claim that a project this big can be completed within two years? Do they understand how much territory the border spans over? Jesus.
Protests and calling in does appear to be working on senators and reps at least a little bit, and there's a state suing Trump over one of the E Os. Two Republicans are voting against De Vos and we might (might) get a third to vote against her. (And quite frankly I think she's a bigger danger than anything. Education is the building block on which all other things are founded.)

I suppose some homophobes expect something like: Marauding Gay Hordes Drag Thousands Of Helpless Citizens From Marriages After Obama Drops Defense Of Marriage Act
(It's The Onion)
"It was just awful—they smashed through our living room window, one of them said 'I've had my eye on you, Roger,' and then they dragged my husband off kicking and screaming," said Cleveland-area homemaker Rita Ellington, one of the latest victims whose defenseless marriage was overrun by the hordes of battle-ready gays that had been clambering at the gates of matrimony since the DOMA went into effect in 1996. "Oh dear God, why did they remove the protection provided by this vital piece of legislation? My children! What will I tell my children?"
A video communique was sent to the media late yesterday from what appears to be the as-yet unidentified leader of the gay marauders, who, adorned in terrifying warpaint, announced "Richard Dickson of Ames, Iowa. We're coming for you next. Put on something nice."

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesSkipped the past 12 pages. Is there anything of importance that I should know of? Did the Orange One break a new record for fascistic bullshittery?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. We have: threatening invasion of Mexico to stop "bad hombres"
, drafting an executive sanction of discrimination based on "religious freedom," and converting counter-extremism programs to solely target Islam (and not say, domestic white supremacist groups count
.
Oh right, and his party delivered to some of his voters right away...GOP-controlled House passes measure to scuttle Obama regulation protecting streams from coal mining debris.
That's all I remember for now...

Obviously, people are trying to manipulate public perception of the riot at Berkeley
. Photo angles mean a lot, if the inauguration didn't tip you off.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
