The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That's the sort of thing he'd claim in retrospect after the whole world is in ruins, and blame the rest of the world for not acting like he claims he wanted them to act.

So we elected a senile man to the highest post in the realm.

Glad I didn't vote for him, but that sentiment does no good. The fact that at least two people I personally know completely agree with him for their own reasons . . . irritates me. They're people who like me, so they don't shove it at me. Still . . . not cool.

One's paranoid about diseases and thinks we actually need to go full-on turtle, and the other has issues with Muslims and needs every cent she can get so she's glad for them cutting down the health insurance penalties. I can see where she's coming from on that last one, but it still irritates.

Sadly, Socialism really only works if it goes full-on, gets everything you need covered, and still leaves room for incentives for people to do the jobs we need done. Though those jobs keep getting fewer and fewer with every bit of automation we add on.

Remember, Trump still lives in the 80s, Japan Takes Over the World is probably a thing he believes is possible.

Japan and China or rather their ultra nationalist right-wing groups always claim that America is a racist, warmongering a-holes even when it's not, you know, true. So, I guess their wish is finally granted.

So, I understand Canada's pretty exposed to US aggression, Rational Insanity. Would you be interested in purchasing some extra territory, cheap? Say, New England, New York, and California?

I'm going to sound like a dick, but this is actually funny at this point. He's practically a cartoon villain now.

There was a point where I found his blatant cartoon villainy funny. It was around six months ago. The humour in the situation has rather dried up.

He's BEEN one, it's just getting worse. All he needed to be a Captain Planet villain was a more Obviously Evil sounding name.

Seems like a moved based on US' aggression.

EU and Mexico are moving to accelerate trade talks.

I foresee a move where Australia becomes closer to China and Mexico to the EU in response to America's insanity.

@JBC, See, merging with New England and/or California just means that Canada ends up as a American colony (albeit a blue state one, with full citizenship and Canadian laws at least initially). And there's no way that the rest of the US would tolerate that, so we're done anyway if the US military is still loyal and intact.

To be frank, if this is World War 2 2.0... I'd rather Canada be Poland or Greece, rather than Austria or Italy. Better dead than a collaborator. Ideally Greece, I like the idea of inflicting at least some (however marginal) amount of damage on the US military and industrial capacity. Make it easier when someone, anyone, brings the fight to them.

And Canada is a big country, plenty of places to hide, and launch an insurgency from.

Of course, I don't really believe that Trump is going to actually use hard power on Canada (soft power, for sure). Something like 85% of Americans have a positive opinion of us, with under 10% having a negative view (and negative doesn't mean they want us invaded). I'm pretty sure that there would be riots/mutinies/Mathis deciding enough is enough, if Trump seriously went War Plan Red on us. Also, our armies and security agencies are so entwined (for now) that we'd see it coming. Might have enough time to dig a few trenches, and torch natural resources in a denial effort.

I'm going to stop now, I don't have time to write a near future Divided States of America VS Canada/Mexico/a few Blue States (with some foreign supplies/volunteers) war story.[lol]

Well, with Trump, I think he'd make a pretty lame, one-dimensional and obnoxious cartoon villain, which is part of why people are so Wrong Genre Savvy around him.

In almost any cartoon you can think of Trump would be the greedy, amoral comical toady with delusions of grandeur being manipulated by the more sinister and competent villain.

Which I guess in this case would be either Putin or Bannon.

[up][up][up]Trump IS a lame, one-dimensional, obnoxious cartoon villain. I'm not even convinced that he's a real person. He's more like some pop-culture reference left over from the 1980s, a la J. R. Ewing.

Trump isn't acting cartoon villain, he's just thinking like a 19th century politician. Much like a certain Russian autocrat. My greatest worry is that Trump's aggressive foreign policy doctrine isn't an abberation, but a natural reaction to the declining power of the United States; a regression towards the multi-polar geopolitics the characterized the height of European imperialism, and there's a very real danger of European powers joining in on the fun out of necessity if it comes to that.

The difference between Trump and a lot of those 19th century leaders (the ones who didn't lead their nations to ruin) is that the latter were usually half way competent, knew how government operated, took advice from their civil servants, and gave a damn about their own country. And they weren't erratic egomaniacs to a man.
