Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Citizens still got detained. A five-year-old US citizen still got handcuffed and held for five hours. And Republicans had the gall to defend that on TV.
Why not even say "We're sorry, mistakes happen, but, we swear, it's worth it"?

You know, my family sometimes goes up to Big Sur in the summer. The water is freezing cold, but once you get used to it it's great for swimming. I remember my brother and I swimming down to catch crayfish with our bare hands. I really, really hope that's something I'll still be able to do with any kids I may have in the future. Seriously, Trump, do you have a vendetta against the Earth or something?!

On top of an Iraq War Vet's family unable to come back to the USA, and 6 Syrian Christians being sent back to that hell hole.
These people should be used by Democrats in advertisements in 4 years to show just how terrible Trump's First Year was, let alone the next 3!
And that's an honest question I have from the Democrat Camp: Why didn't they have a "Former Republican Terrified of Candidate" ad like Johnson had? An "In your heart, you know he might" Ad? If Hillary had done those 2 things, and put them either on Youtube or on TV, Trump would've certainly lost in the Rust Belt.

Depends...let's put it this way: If you don't do school choice, you have to ensure that every school, no matter in which neighbourhood, has the same equipment. It is a big problem that the pupils in the rich districts get every advantage from the get go while the ones in the poor districts are forced to do with whatever is offered to them. On the other hand, though, if you allow school choice, there is a considerable risk that there is a school for the "desirable" pupils and another school for the rest. It might give pupils the opportunity to mix with all kind of different people.
I would focus on ensuring that every state school offers the same quality of learning, though.
I'll be honest and say that I, in my eternal naivete and being a lifelong private school student, once thought that "school choice" sounded like a neat idea, until I gave it some though and realized that with all the regulations that would be needed to make it even remotely fair it might as well be public school anyway.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonAfter reading De Vos profile, I am pretty sure her School Choice is just a blanket term for her to defend For Profit schools so she and her cronies can profit from and to cater the religious fundamentalists and rich assholes who don't wan their kids 'learning things they don't approve or sharing the school with groups they don't approve.
That along defunding public schools in favor of for profit private schools.
Inter arma enim silent legesBecause they're not sorry and they don't feel the need to lie about it because Trump showed them you can display casual disregard for non-white, non-american people and it isn't going to be a dealbreaker.
I feel like I'm pretty centrist or even right-wing on a lot of things, but there are certain inalienable things such as protection of the environment, civil rights, and tolerance for all that prevent me from considering the Republicans as any sort of viable option.
Also, I find that that Political Compass site to be pretty useless.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonThe problem with charter schools is they basically can kick out any student that doesn't meet their "standards". I think even private schools as we usually think of them are required to go through a process to kick out any students at their campus.
@Dingo: Hillary did do those kinds of ads, they just apparently weren't run in the right places. In any case, I'm seeing plenty of "repeal and replace" ads now, and I hope to God that the Democrats learn the lesson here and just blast out as many ads as possible about how bad Trump and his policies are.
Isn't the Paradox of Tolerance
a glorious thing?
Personally, even though I dislike Intolerant people, I think it is important that we do tolerate them. If they are not allowed to be Intolerant, then how would we know that Intolerance is wrong? People need to see that hate, in any form, is wrong, and people who espouse hate and tyranny might grab a couple of naive minds, but the majority would disagree with it. If you stopped all Intolerance, then one day it'll spring it's ugly head and gain a massive following with the Rebellious youth who would one day take over and form an Intolerant society.
I think the GOP is just an affront to basic human decency and thoroughly anti-intellectual, and labels like "right" or "left" really don't matter in the face of that. Conspiring to rig the system to put yourself in power perpetually, showing a blatant disrespect and disregard for people who simply happen to exist and fomenting distrust of the hard work put in by scientists and scholars based entirely on "feels" and paranoia means they are scum. I normally avoid being vitriolic like that, but there comes a point where too much is too much, and the GOP has long crossed that line.
If someone who's "right-wing" supports or makes excuses for any of that, they can fuck off.

It depends on what you mean by "tolerate".
What people usually mean that they are not tolerant of intolerance is to make it very clear to those people that they do not approve of their behavior and that they don't think their attitudes belong in a civilized society.

I believe in the ideal of capitalism, but not necessarily the way it's being conducted, but I believe that something similar to the current system could work if 1) regulations could be put in place to ensure a level playing field and 2) companies are held accountable for their actions. Otherwise, I think that if the incentives are aligned correctly, it could work. Granted, this would still leave some inequality issues, and I'm pretty short on ideas for solving it besides progressive taxation.
I feel like I'm pretty biased though, since this is the kind of system which would benefit me.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonTrue.
I think it's just a product of the kind of environments I tend to frequent, where capitalism really isn't very popular. The point being, I still believe that the corporation is an important and valuable institution.
In general, I feel like maybe I should talk less.
