Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Whether Bannon has any ideology beyond a thirst for personal power remains to be seen; much like his boss, he's gone all over the map in terms of his past statements.
We need to pick and choose our battles because we lack the power to block the GOP, meaning offering major, vocal, resistance is, for lawmakers, solely a symbolic gesture, and it's very important to avoid burning out too early and allowing political nihilism and fatigue to set in. Voter apathy much more than suppression tactics, opposition intimidation, and ballot box stuffing is the decisive factor in maintaining power in an illiberal democracy.

So this is going to sound like the most privileged and idiotic question in the world but given all this talk of possible war with China or Iran, it makes one wonder about unfulfilled dreams. Mine is to have a top of the line gaming pc, around 3k worth. (I never had a desktop, only laptops, hence the high cost). Would it be a good idea to get one now? On one hand if china gets it, then components will become hard to come by but on the other hand, it could become a hindrance if I need to flee the country (I am an expat working in the netherlands). Thoughts? Sorry for the dumb question but I have no one to ask.

When they lack the power to truly block the GOP agenda, symbolic opposition is all they have left, and they should use it. It's either make a principled stand for American values, or roll over while mumbling "I'll start fighting back aaaaany day now."
The level of public opposition rising up against the Trump regime is unprecedented in living memory. Any Congressional Democrat who looks at millions of people marching nationwide for the same cause and goes "clearly they want me to sit back and do nothing to obstruct Trump" deserves to lose their seat.

Speaking of which, Florida Congressman Drafts Bill To ‘Completely Abolish’ The EPA.
There are no words. Or at least, not any that will not get me permanently banned from this forum, so I am going to be very quiet until I have had the opportunity to calm down, because I am furious.
Ironically, this is from Florida. Again, I am not going to say what I'm thinking, because that would not be a smart move.
Of course, just because a bill has been introduced, doesn't mean it's been passed.

Betsy "Unqualified Ableist Hack" DeVos is only one GOP "no" vote away from being defeated. If anybody with a GOP Senator feels like getting on the phone to hold their feet to the fire, now's the time.
...Holy Jesus.
But surely it'll never pass. Just like Trump'll never be elected.
Do these people not care about the future of life on Earth? A lot of them at least have kids, right? Do they not care about their kids?

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent.""Do these people not care about the future of life on Earth? A lot of them at least have kids, right? Do they not care about their kids?"
In school one time I watched a pro-environment TV special ("The Earth Day Special") and they had the cast of Married... with Children on. Al Bundy said there's no point in protecting the environment, because he'll be dead by the time it gets bad.
I suspect that's the attitude of a lot of climate change deniers. The rest are a mixture of: "Well the end times are a-comin' so why bother?"Note and "IT'S A CHINESE CONSPIRACY DESIGNED TO FORCE US TO BUY EXPENSIVE PRODUCTS!" Oh, and willful ignorance by saying that weather is cyclical.
And of course there's the oil industry, which only cares about making profits, environment be damned.

I don't really have the frame of reference to say how normal that is, though I personally suspect in a normal administration they would say the President was going to one place while he's actually somewhere else rather than flat out admitting he's going somewhere secretly.

Apparently the answer is "not normal."

And Jeff Sessions?
