Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Also it becomes a problem when the people running a corporation do evil and then shed the corporation like a hermit crab shell while being protected from liability themselves. (There are good reasons to separate corporate and personal liability, so if something goes wrong your personal assets aren't at stake, but it can be gamed and abused.)
I usually don't post Cracked articles in this thread but...
This one is way too relevant for this one. 5 Ways powerful people trick you into hating underdogs.
... Any news over the past 12 hours that I've been away from this thread?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Doesn't seem like it. Those 12 hours were mostly night time, so Trump probably slept for about three of them and mumbled madly to himself for the other nine.
ETA: Oh, wait, spoke a little too soon. He actually left Obama's LGBT executive order alone, saying he would let it stand. That's good. Is it sad that probably the best thing he's done so far was to say he wasn't going to do anything at all on something?

Well, he took credit for a unit cost reduction for the F-35 that was already expected to happen, then called the plane he famously slammed a few weeks ago "great".
So, points to everyone who called Trump not actually doing anything with the program, then takes credit when economies of scale kick in.
What's funny with that, besides the "kid who obviously didn't do homework ineffectually trying to b.s." is that it's not even accurate. AFAIK, Douglas was famous during his own life and has been consistently well known since.
Also, to quote Yair Rosenberg, "I was going to watch Trump talk about Black History Month but decided it'd probably be more fun to have my brain extracted through my ears."
Apparently this was also said at the event.

What the ACTUAL fuck did I just read?!
New Survey coming this weekend!

Corporate personhood basically means that the articles of incorporation create a legal person, which can sue, be sued, and enter into contracts, as well as bear liability without transferring it to shareholders like a partnership or sole proprietorship.
The problems start showing up when you take the leap that these "legal people" have the same rights as actual, literal people, despite lacking such things as bodies, wills and minds of their own, and, assuming that you believe in them, souls.
