Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That's why we are a nation of laws and not public opinion surveys. Illegal is illegal. We put up with Citizens United and the Electoral College, they can put up with this.
That said, cities or even states declaring themselves "sanctuaries" is hardly going to start a war. All it means is the local cops won't go after them. It doesn't impede the Feds at all.
Btw, "Reactionary" is an accurate term. They basically want their economic and cultural privileges back.
Congressional Dems have declared war on Trump

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart. This isn't even the first time this has happened. The only difference is that 160 years ago they were called Personal Liberty laws
and were passed by free states against the Fugitive Slace Act
passed by the slave state controlled federal government.

Doesn't matter because Trump has vowed to cut off federal funding to sanctuary cities and states. That'll lead to a response by California escalating thing.
It goes:
California declares itself a sanctuary state.
Trump cuts off federal funding.
California cuts off federal taxes.
Californians feeling that resentment sign up to pass the Calexit initiative leaving the door open for a secesssion.
Trump invades California with troops and has troops put down protests considering them rebels.
The other states start revolting.

Democrats can't really do anything meaningful as a superminority party, even with these protest, and even if we might love it. At best, it staves off boredom until the next election.
Does that make New England High Rock?

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."If as a superminority the Democrats are powerless to do anything to stop Trump, their war declaration is empty words, useless, worthless! Inútil! Muda da!

Was that not immediately obvious?
Is "superminority" already a thing? Because that's what Democrats are. They're so insignificant that the actually insignificant feels superior to them.
Honestly, what Democrats need to be mentally prepared for is losing most of the battles. Every time the congressmen bluster and grandstand, it's treated as something glorious, but it'll be for naught. The GOP has the numbers on its side and the political control, and they are more than unscrupulous enough to make use of them.

I have pretty much only watched lighthearted comedies and romance the last few weeks, because every time I open my browser 90-95% of what I read leaves me caught between the urges to take a shower to wash off the disgust, or punch a wall in frustration.

I actually saw someone point out that Hillary might be doing the smart thing by staying out of the limelight. By doing so, she denies Trump the convenient bogeyman he was able to use her as throughout the entire campaign. Now there's no "Crooked Hillary" for him to shout at and blame everything on—which makes deflecting blame away from himself much harder, given how much he leaned on that particular tactic.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Theres this little thing called the "filibuster". Use it, Dems. Did anyone actually read the article?

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Yes.
The concern there is the GOP immediately nuking the filibuster in retaliation, and to consolidate their hold on power. (Which they have threatened to do, I believe.) They do that, and they can rule Congress effectively unopposed, barring the rare defection. And it would be perfectly in keeping with their MO.
