Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hey, remember this little speech by President Reagan?
Reagan may have been lethally negligent towards the LGBT and introduced an economically disastrous fiscal policy, but he stood up to foreign tyrants. Once upon a time, the Grand Old Party had at least a few admirable ideals left.
Now what are we left with?
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for you![]()
CA is my adopted home state and I'm really proud of it too right now. However, I do not want any stupid talks of secession or rebellion until it becomes absolutely, strictly necessary, which it is absolutely not at the moment. However, Trump's policies should be resisted.
California's courage ought to be serving as an inspiration to all the other blue states.
Also, I mentioned this before, but in the event of their federal funding being cut, California is looking into means through which they could retaliate. Namely, cutting off the tax dollars they send to the government. And as a donor state, Cali actually sends more money to the government than the government sends to them—so they would be the victors in that little financial dust-up.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent.""Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
The Northeast and the other three Pacific states not named Alaska might want to follow our examples unless it would be disastrous for them in a way it would not be for us.
I'm concerned that such actions, if they undertaken, would get us declared to be "in rebellion" and treated accordingly. Unless, say, Texas did something similar under Obama.
Also, I'm kind of concerned about ending up on a list somewhere, and I don't want to fall into the trap that right wingers did under Obama.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonReagan is, or was, a part of the Problem though: Reagan radicalized the Republican Party with his Objectivist Libertarian, Neo-Conservative Ideology that was neither purely Libertarian or Conservative. The party warped into this "Never Compromise, Never Surrender" group of irresponsible ideologues that only care about the Problems they cause when they aren't in the Majority because of Reagan. And this Radicalism grew with 9/11, the Iraq War, the Great Recession, Obama's Victory (and Re-Election). It gave birth to the Tea Party Movement that was just as irresponsible, just as rebellious, and just as vile as the Republicans were. But they were rebels without a cause, and they didn't know how to govern at all, and when the people who supported them realized that the Tea Party was weak and ineffectual in governing, they turned towards 'Strong Men' movements; The Alt-Right, which spreads 'Fake News' and Hate towards anyone that doesn't agree with them, and more importantly, Donald Trump, that feeds off of the idea of Strength, and uses everyone and anyone to his advantage or tosses them aside and spits on their face.
Now, keep in mind, I do like Reagan as a person, but Reagan got the Ball Rolling. If he had seen what his Political Career would lead to (Hell, things might get worse for all we know!), I would be that he would have never gotten into Politics at all.

Dingo, if you don't mind me asking, why do you capitalize every noun?
Luckily for me, I've already posted several FB comments voicing my, uh, dispeasure at events, including a legit essay on why climate change needs to be addressed now, under my real name. Hell, I plan to do more of it anyway, for whatever it's worth.
Of course, I think winning in 2018 is our only chance, even if the Dems take the White House in 2020 it'll probably be too late by then.

I don't think those types of people can be really called conservative voters anymore, and I won't dignify them by referring to them as such, in much the same way I won't do the same for the Republican party. Obama is more "conservative" than they are.

"Exclusive: Trump's travel ban polarizes America - Reuters/Ipsos poll" - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-immigration-poll-exclusive-idUSKBN15F2MG
Disagreement with the ban isn't as high among Americans as we'd like it to be, but at least it still outnumbers agreement.

More California resistance, though insure if it's already been linked

The day of your eighteenth birthday, if I recall. Also, they might ask you to register for the draft the same day. In Alabama refusing to do so makes your taxes more difficult or something. I can't remember what the threat was.
See, back then we had a reasonable President who wasn't going to march off to war without cause. Now....
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for you49 percent of Americans agree with Trump's travel ban
.....
We're so fucked.
New Survey coming this weekend! What worries me the most about this: I have the feeling that Trump is just testing out with what he can get away. And I don't talk about the protests, I am talking about the executive in the US. If enough people buy into the "we have to follow the word of the state, no matter what" idea, than it won't matter how many people protest, they will be silenced, step by step.
"We need to ban these people to protect us from terrorism!!"
Meanwhile police brutality against minorities, terrorism from christian extremists and white nationalists either don't happen or are all isolated incidents.
Sure is double standard up in here
By the way, the poll isn't that big. Only 1201 people answered it, 453 democrats and 478 republicans. So the results aren't exactly end-all be-all I think.

Nope. On race relations we do alright, but that's because we have to face those demons. We are still short-changing the Native Americans though. On LGBT issues, Europe resolved those long before we even began to think about it. In Europe, religion is generally no longer a prerequisite to function in everyday society, whereas in parts of the US town hall meetings may be held in religious buildings too, with all the implications that carries. Charity and homeless shelters tend to be church-run too, with the local governments turning a blind eye.
Urban America may be different, but Urbana comes with her own baggage.

But in the best cases, either the troops won't even try to shoot their own citizens regardless of ideologies or would have to put with a fight against the whole N Gs stationed there.
