The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't have much else to add here. I haven't done much with NN lately because I've been bogged down with other stuff like a computer crash (Windows 10 I will never use you again) and of the three congresspeople I messaged, none has actually responded by email. Sadly it seems phone calls are the only reliable way through and even that's iffy. I will say I'm voting straight Democrat in 2018 and if Manchin accepts Sessions he ain't getting my vote.

ETA: I will say we definitely need to keep fighting for Net Neutrality because if it goes, this place goes too. At least it goes on a donation/subscription model, because threads like this mark us as The Enemy.

DeVos approved by committee in a party-line vote, as per CNN, now she goes to the Senate floor for the confirmation I guess. This will be the Dem's chance to try to block her. What would happen if she or any cabinet nomination fails the confirmation vote?

Also, also according to CNN, she may have plagiarized an Obama administration quote on civil rights.

Senate Democrats Boycott Votes for Steve Mnuchin (Treasury) and Tom Price (HHS), delaying their vote. Why didn't they do this with Betsy DeVos and Jeff Sessions?

Someone edited Sally Yates' Wikipedia page.

My university is now asking for information from students/profs/post-docs etc. who are travelling to the US in the next few months. They want to understand the extent to which we are affected by the new travel restrictions. I don't know all of the details, but this feels like something which should. have. been. made clear to our country, already.

The Republicans are proposong a way to allocate electoral votes that would have guaranteed a Trump win even if Clinton had won by five points.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/under-a-new-system-clinton-could-have-won-the-popular-vote-by-5-points-and-still-lost/

The GOP had better pray that their election rigging works, because if they try this and lose they'll be lucky not to have their party declared a criminal organization.

I feel like the EC, if it's going to stay around, it should be proportional by share of the popular vote, because doing it by congressional district is hilariously abusable.

Especially when most red states will remain winner takes all. So even if the Democrats sweep areas like Dallas and Houston, the E Vs go to the Republican. Because freedom.

The GOP know everyone hates them. Which is why they have no intention of risking another free election. And they have the power to do just that.

I think I read the if the EC was by share of popular vote, this election would've ended up being a tie- Trump and Hillary would've both gotten 235 votes, with third parties and independents getting the remaining 68. Which would've mean that congress chooses the winner, so.

But the Republicans are trying to do it so that, in certain swing and blue states, E Vs get divided on the basis of who win each (gerrymandered to hell in a way that most real democracies stopped using decades ago) district.

If Trump (or whoever the next Republican candidate is) loses the popular vote by another landslide margin...well lookie here! Five million illegal votes cast, note  as discovered by our very own AG Jeff Sessions! Let's just purge those from the ballot, and...hey, a landslide victory for our side!

Also, the Republicans are still working hard to criminalize peaceful protest.
