The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Have they? I admit we have the benefit of hindsight but would we honestly compare politicians like Reagan and the Bushes to Hitler even with all their horribleness? It's not an accusation to throw around lightly.

I wasn't alive for Reagan and HW but I remember the George W Bush is Hitler accusations.

That isn't even really necessary I think. Voter suppression and gerrymandering will do it and with people like Sessions in the administration I see those as basically shoe-ins. About the only way to beat that would be to brute force your way through those with an enormous turnout, but there's no telling whether Trump and the GOP would accept the results after 4 years of god knows what.

You're assuming that all Republicans will stay voting for Trump even though he fails them. If the economy enters a recession, he will definitely lose even if he stacked the deck.

Santa Anna is the same guy who managed to lose a decisive battle because he allowed his army to take a mid-day nap and the opposing army used that to launch a surprise attack (Battle at San Jacinto, Texas Revolution).

I was including the possibility of some of the republican voters turning on him as part of the turnout I mentioned. I have no doubt that the ones who are tepid in their support of Trump or feel that he has failed them (which he will, it's just a matter of when that failure has tangible effects) will either not show up in 2020 or vote for the democratic candidate if they are sufficiently persuasive.

Problem is like I said, Trump is an unhinged narcissist. He would not gracefully or quietly accept the possibility of him losing, and at that point you might need to remove him by force.

Whether it's in four or eight years, I can't imagine he'll make the transition an easy one on whoever succeeds him. Mostly because I doubt they'll have gained any competency by then.

The best case scenario I can picture is him being so exhausted he doesn't want the job anymore so he concedes, but then he makes the transition as catty and annoying as possible.

There are at least 200 signatures on a memo at the State Department dissenting with Trump's refugee ban.

Spicer keeps digging himself deeper.

On Monday, NBC White House correspondent Kristen Welker pressed Spicer about whether the detention was necessary.

“The president recognizes that it is his duty and obligation to keep this country safe,” Spicer explained. “And by instituting a process by which we look at these countries over a 90-day period and the process by which the people can come in out of this country to ensure the safety of each and every one of us, I think, is something that makes a heck of a lot of sense.”

“When you look at the 329,000 people [who traveled to the U.S. over the weekend], 109 were inconvenienced for the safety and security of us all,” the Trump spokesman said. “And to make sure that, if they are a 5 year old, that maybe they’re with their parents and they don’t pose a threat.”

“But to assume that just because of someone’s age or gender or whatever that they don’t pose a threat would be misguided and wrong.”

Oh here's a doozy: "Observers on Twitter quickly noted an exchange between Sessions and Yates from March of 2015, during her confirmation hearing."

Sessions: “It tends to be a political world at the top of the Department of Justice,” Sessions noted at the beginning of his questioning. “Do you think the attorney general has a responsibility to say no to the president if he asks for something that’s improper? A lot of people have defended the [Loretta] Lynch nomination [by President Obama] for example, by saying, ‘Well, he appoints somebody who’s gonna execute his views, what’s wrong with that?’ But if the views he wants to execute are unlawful, should the attorney general or the deputy attorney general say no?”

Yates:“Senator, I feel the attorney general or the deputy attorney general has an obligation to follow the law and the Constitution, and give their independent legal advice to the president,” Yates said.

Later, Sessions recounted Bush-era Attorney General John Ashcroft’s refusal to sign off on a surveillance program deemed illegal by the Justice Department. “I hope you feel free to say no in the character of John Ashcroft and others who said no to President Nixon,” he told Yates.

He reminds me a little of 19th century Mexico's Antonio Lopez De Santa Ana, 8th president of Mexico. He flip-flopped parties and positions depending on which benefitted him the most. He had pretensions to kingship. So incompetent he lost half of Mexico to the US.

So, Bannon needs Senate confirmation to sit on the NSC. Time to call your Republican Senators, and it goes without saying that any Democrats that vote for him need to be primaried with the fury of a thousand suns.

[up] I already know where my senators (both Democrats) stand on Bannon, so I don't think it will be necessary to badger them about it. But had one of my senators been a Republican, you better believe I'd be calling them.

So the House has no say in this?

It's a joke, Dingo. A reference to the time that Perry forgot the name of one of the departments he wanted remove if he became President - the department he is now the head of.
