Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump's opinion blows with the wind. As we've previously established, it's entirely based on whoever's talked to him last.
- Monday: "After talking to one of Obama's people, I have decided to take no actions against LGBT people."
- Tuesday:' "After a quick talk with Vice President Pence, I have decided to outlaw gay marriage.
- Wednesday: "After watching an episode of Full House this morning, I am now gay married."
Hmm, maybe someone needs to send him all of the available episodes of Steven Universe and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. His maturity level is about right for those shows.
Hey, if Reagan started taking nukes seriously after watching The Day After...

Disgusted, but not surprisedTrump's Mismatched and Bizarre Agenda 2
- Thursday: "After watching Yugioh Arc V this morning with my son Barron, I've decided I will defeat ISIS by dueling Baghdadi."
- Friday: "After a quick seance contacting Rudolf Hess' ghost, I now only eat organic food and am very into horoscopes."
- Saturday: "Following my son Eric's recommendation, I watched The Prisoner. I'm not sure what I'm doing today."

I don't know, those might be a little too mature for him. He'd probably get bored and put on G.I Joe.

something@Link To The Future That's an insult to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and dodo birds. Especially to the dodos — poor birds are already extinct, they don't need to be associated with Trump.

We know. The New York Times reported it about 5 hours ago.

something@Crimson Zephyr: Wow, if your main contribution to the thread is to say "we're not better than this" then uh... I'm not even understanding why you're in the thread. This is exactly the kind of hyperbolic pessimism that I've come to dislike in the thread. I don't have words for how infuriating that kind of talk is. It solves nothing, and says we shouldn't bother trying. What are you even trying to accomplish by saying that? This is a serious question.
Also, I second the request to stop making posts that are just video embeds: I requested earlier for us to stop making posts that were just quotes from fiction without any other context and the videos aren't any better. I know a lot of you get a kick out of them but they're getting kind of spammy now.

America may have tripped and fallen, but it's not out of the race. I'm not so pessimistic (yet) that I think the Trump administration is a Career-Ending Injury.

Disgusted, but not surprisedHalliburton is advising its workers from the countries on the banned list to avoid visiting the US
. Yes, that Halliburton.
Remember how the Steele dossier claimed that Trump was promised 19 percent of Rosneft if sanctions were lifted on Russia? 19.5 percent of Rosneft just got sold
, buyers unknown.

Yes, to you, Aceof Spades, for knocking sense in what's important in this fight here.
I think the Hitler parallels have lost their power with the Republican half of the population. Democrats have been calling Republican presidential candidates Hitler since Nixon.
Now that we have an actual Hitler-esque candidate, they've already hand-waved it as another overreaction by us.
Same with Republicans calling every democrat a socialist. It's lost its meaning. Kind of why I don't think that label would've even hurt Bernie Sanders if he had beat Hillary.
That half of Republican hardcore Trump supporters is never going to go away. But the other half are willing to jump ship if Trump doesn't deliver.
I'm not worried about Trump winning a re-election in 4 years which probably he won't win. I'm worried about Trump cancelling elections and assuming direct control now.
Vanity Fair: Jared Kushner's influence over Trump appears to be flagging
Less than 12 hours later, though, it all fell apart. After Peña Nieto reiterated that Mexico does not plan to pay for Trump’s proposed wall, Trump tweeted that if Mexico is “unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting.” Just like that, the meeting was canceled. “Kushner was fucking furious,” the source told me. “I’d never once heard him say he was angry throughout the entire campaign. But he was furious.” (A representative for the Trump administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)
Kushner also appears to have already endured the physical toll of the job. He has become pale, the source noted. His body language and his demeanor toward Trump had changed, and he had lost a noticeable amount of weight from his already slight frame in just a week. (Another source who knows Kushner said that he typically forgets to eat when working long hours. Nevertheless, Politico’s Playbook on Monday spotted him picking up pizza in Dupont Circle on Sunday evening.)
Bannon's divorce records
. Posting because it contains a pretty good record of what's inside his head. Not recommended bedtime reading.
Bannon will require Senatorial confirmation to be allowed to serve on the NSC
. Call your Senator.
Trump's a political chameleon.
He reminds me a little of 19th century Mexico's Antonio Lopez De Santa Ana, 8th president of Mexico.
He flip-flopped parties and positions depending on which benefitted him the most. He had pretensions to kingship. So incompetent he lost half of Mexico to the US.
A charlatan of the highest degree.
Narcissistic enough to be the self-proclaimed Napoleon of the West despite being an incompetent general.
Have they? I admit we have the benefit of hindsight but would we honestly compare politicians like Reagan and the Bushes to Hitler even with all their horribleness? It's not an accusation to throw around lightly.
That isn't even really necessary I think. Voter suppression and gerrymandering will do it and with people like Sessions in the administration I see those as basically shoe-ins.
About the only way to beat that would be to brute force your way through those with an enormous turnout, but there's no telling whether Trump and the GOP would accept the results after 4 years of god knows what.
