The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Sally Yates probably knew that her time in the Justice Department was running out no matter what, so she opted to go out swinging instead of being quietly let go during the transition. Which is something I can respect.

[up][up][up] What the fuck? Who in the name of Christmas was that?

Do we have faceless Trump-supporting goons with military-grade hardware roaming the country? Because if so, we will have completed the transformation into a bad video game setting.

[up] I'm pretty sure it was a bunch of troops violating their Code of Conduct, who will probably be disciplined, but that's it. If it starts becoming a constant thing, then I'd start to worry, but I'm positive it's an isolated incident by a bunch of young recruits who don't know better.

Both the National Guard and Fort Knox say that they never sent out any convoys. All the vehicles are also missing unit markings.

Oh really when?

Well, the good news just keeps on comin'. Here's a former DOJ spokesperson referring to Yates's firing as a serious breakdown of the rule of law. And warning that, if Trump will fire an AG for this, he will fire anyone for anything they do he doesn't like. Don't count on government insiders to keep him in check, in other words.

This is already being referred to as "the Monday Night Massacre."

...Wow. The acting director of ICE has also been fired and replaced.

It's a purge. Another one, rather.

This is already being referred to as "the Monday Night Massacre."

As worrying as this all is, I would like to note that I am extremely opposed to calling a non-violent government purge a 'massacre,' given the attack in Quebec City last night.

[up] If it helps, the name is a reference to the Saturday Night Massacre of the Nixon era, not a new invention.

[up][up] I agree with that. I say we call it "The Primetime Purge". It's more fitting.

[up] Man, only week 2 and he's already being compared to Nixon during the Watergate Scandal. This presidency really is garbage.

[up][up][up]It was meant as a reference to Saturday Night Massacre, when Nixon fired several members of his staff, including his attorney general, during the Watergate Scandal. It's being referenced as it's the only incident in contemporary American politics this can be compared to. Nevertheless, you are right, we should use a different term.

Yeah, given the recent terrorist attack, it's probably best to try to come up with another name out of respect for the tragedy. (Although I don't know if that'll stop it from taking off in the media.)

Also, given how quickly things are going to hell, you might want to save the massacre term for when Trump has his goons fire on a protest. Or bombard a defiant city. Or detain opponents en masse.

It doesn't really need a name it's just going to be a minor footnote... it's only going to get worse day by day.

When people start dying and concentration camps start up then yeah and that will be coming real soon.

I don't think I am ever going to get a good night sleep for a long while... ffs...

@Madskillz: The very article you linked said that both the close by military installations denied that those vehicles were theirs, and pointed out that they may be military surplus. Basically, old stuff that got sold off.

Which basically tells me that the survivalist crowd is feeling more empowered to be braying jackasses at the moment. Our military is infamously apolitical in how they conduct themselves, I'm not so sure that that's going to change fast at all.

As for the firings: Welp, we'll see what happens when they realize they've fired only people authorized to do things that are vital. If Sessions gets blocked tomorrow (and I'm under the impression that they have enough Republicans to pass him through.) It'll be interesting to watch.

Also, is firing two people really a purge? Or did more people than that get fired?

I am not shocked that Yates got fired. In fact, I would be more surprised if she hadn't been fired. after taking the correct action and telling Trump to go shove it.

How many Dem votes for him?

Edit- I found it- it wasn't the vote on him, but it allowed him to go forward (which yeah, means he's going to be confirmed by the law of numbers). The Dems were Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Mark R. Warner of Virginia. Not too surprised since these are all DINO types I believe.
