Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

x2 is mostly right.
When I say "I don't care much for X"; it means that I know about X, I might be mildly interested X, I usually don't like X, and X is not on my "Things to rag on list" yet.
Seriously, that's one of the least confusing posts that I've made.

Answer no master, never the slave Carry your dreams down into the grave Every heart, like every soul, equal to breakThis Rogue POTUS twitter is bizarre — If it's real, who is this guy? How does he have this kind of access? Are there multiple sources?
Every time we discuss whether Rogue POTUS is genuine, I'm reminded of this scene
from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
@Crimson Zephyr: It's been said several times already that it seems the account is merely a mouthpiece for a loose network of White House staff members in various unspecified positions.
... BTW, what is that three-pronged symbol in your avvie? I keep seeing variations of it in other posters' avatars (e.g. RBluefish), too.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. For the record, I'm highly skeptical about the account for about a dozen reasons.
Symbol of the Rebel Alliance in Star Wars. I think blkwhtrbbt started using it first?

It's called the Starbird, the symbol of the Rebel Alliance from Star Wars. Mine specifically, with the sunburst behind it, is the symbol of the government it becomes, the New Republic.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Some relevant breaking news from the New York Times,
the acting Attorney General is ordering the Justice Department to disregard the muslim ban.
“I am responsible for ensuring that the positions we take in court remain consistent with this institution’s solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right,” Ms. Yates wrote in a letter to Justice Department lawyers. “At present, I am not convinced that the defense of the executive order is consistent with these responsibilities nor am I convinced that the executive order is lawful.”
The decision is largely symbolic — Mr. Trump’s nominee to be attorney general, Jeff Sessions, is likely to be confirmed soon — but it highlights the deep divide at the Justice Department and elsewhere in the government over Mr. Trump’s order.
Mr. Trump has the authority to fire Ms. Yates but, as the top Senate-confirmed official at the Justice Department, she is the only one authorized to sign foreign surveillance warrants, an essential function at the department.
“For as long as I am the acting attorney general, the Department of Justice will not present arguments in defense of the executive order, unless and until I become convinced that it is appropriate to do so,” she wrote.

somethingNope, 'twas I. He copied me, the scoundrel.
As much of a cynic as I may be, I know that they won't. This will be fought just as hard as the Muslim ban, if not more so.
Here's a rare moment of...perhaps not optimism, but at least recognition that we may not be in for a total repeat of history.
You know that famous quote from the Holocaust that's been getting modified to fit the Trump regime—"first they came for the Muslims, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Muslim?" Leading to people to suggest "first they came for the Muslims and we said not this time, motherfuckers?"
Look around. Look at the airports, the mass protests, the lawsuits, the outrage. This is us officially saying "not this time, motherfuckers."

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Is anyone here in West VA? Senator Joe Manchin (D) might be voting for Sessions and Tillerson
. Consider getting on the phone if he's your Senator.
Since everyone's scared that the military may follow Trump, here's a military guy on Reddit saying that's probably not the case
. Feel free to not believe the guy, I mean, it's a random nobody on Reddit, but since you're on the edge of the Despair Event Horizon all the time, here's some hope for you.
And for some irony, you know how Reddit's the_donald was so important to Trump's campaign? here's one of Reddit's founders encouraging to protest the muslim ban and telling his family's own story of immigration
. Way to alienate your base, man. No really, this one time you did good there, but you should've moderated your site better or we wouldn't be in this situation to begin with.
Reddit doesn't really have a unified "base". It's more or less an open platform and moderation is left to the creators and maintainers of each subreddit. Your experience there depends on where you hang out; I read and post in a couple game-related subs and it is not anything like /r/pol supposedly is.
Even more details on a potential EO against LGBT federal employees
.
Fucking hell, this is a goddamn nightmare.

I am going to charitably assume he means the LGBT community and their rights do not affect him in any way, shape, or form, since presumably he is a straight male, but he doesn't want their rights taken away.
Oissu!
