Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Mad Skillz: Already posted.
Re: law enforcement picking a side. We already know which side the largest police union in the country is on. There'll be pockets of resistance (I believe the police chief of LA has stated that he will not comply with any mass deportation orders), but overall we can't count on them to back us.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."@The Handle: Yeah, and look at what that did: It pissed off Conservatives and Objectivist Libertarians to the point they actively aligned with the Alt-Right and, more importantly, Trump. All Executive Orders have done for the past 6 Years (and then the next 4) is pissed off one side of the Nation and increased Sectarianism, and given more power to the increasingly powerful President who is currently Trump. Trump being President is enough for me to be convinced that Executive Orders need to be ended: Only Congress should create Laws, and even a Conservative Congress is better then Trump doing whatever the hell he wants with one document.
@Fighteer: Democracy in the USA isn't dead yet; People are still, and constantly, Protesting, Democrats are still in Congress and in States (even if they can't do much), a number of Republicans have spoken out against Trump, even if they don't always, and the Courts are still independent.
When all the Protesters are arrested or Shot, when all the Democrats and 'Disloyal' Republicans are in jail, when all the Courts are packed with Alt-Right Leninist and Anarchists, then I will say American Democracy is dead. Until then, we must keep fighting to keep it alive.
@Link To The Future: A decent amount, actually. But there are also ways for the federal government to try to lean on them and browbeat them into submission. The Fuhrer already signed an executive order (Christ) cutting federal funding from sanctuary states/cities.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Rumor has it that Sessions is calling black lawmakers in Alabama, trying to convince them to voice their support for him.
Sounds like he may be a bit nervous about his AG nomination—although probably needlessly so. The Congressional GOP will vote for him no matter what, and that's all it takes.
I am so so glad I'm in California. I'm proud of my adopted home state. We have to resist this in any way we can. I'm watching this space to see what kind of developments are, as I think this is where we'll see what kind of administration we're dealing with.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonI live in the midwest, so I'm probably fucked. Trump's policies will completely destroy the local industries, but the hicks will always vote for him anyway. At least I probably don't have to worry about Trump deploying the army here, although my county went blue so he might deploy them anyway.

somethingCalifornia's awesome, yes. They're making no secret of the defiance of the Trump regime.
Possibly important: this person believes that the Rogue POTUS account is in fact Russian in origin, meant as misinformation.
As evidence, they point to a number of easy-to-miss linguistic errors, consistent with a Russian speaker unfamiliar with the proper way of writing certain English idioms.
Also bureaucracies are inherently staffed by people who aspire to do the job. CBP would attract people gung-ho about deportation just as the EPA attracts environmentalists. Not necessarily good, but that may prove critical when trying to figure out which enforcement agency to turn to for some particular situation.
I don't know about abroad, but ethics here is an oft-mocked thing that's barely taught or emphasized. I doubt the CBP even knows the constitutional significance of its actions. It's a mistake to think actors go into a situation fully aware of their impact, even if its their responsibility to be aware.

All the more reason for me to try and get to Canada. Speaking of which, it looks like there are a ton of schools that are willing to take in international students as long as you've got what it takes, (and I'm pretty damn sure I do,) so maybe this isn't as much of a pipe dream as part of me thought it was. The question though is if I should really do it. If I go for a Masters, that could put me in a shitton of debt if I can't get a scholarship, and there's no real guarantee of that. Whereas if I just go with any random degree, then that's just me taking a 2-4 year vacation, because I've got an associate's and a bachelor's already. Part of me wonders if I even should attempt it; if I should just stay here and tough out. But every day that passes is another day that tells me this is a sinking ship, and that it might be best just to get the heck off. Hell, if I'm lucky, maybe it'll have even righted itself by the time I got back.
Of course, having to pay $100 dollars just to send in a fucking application in some places doesn't exactly endear me to the idea anymore than it already has

@11: While I really don't care that much for the LGBT community, I don't approve of revoking the (relatively) small list of rights that they have.
After 2,000 years you'd expect that the homophobia and transphobia would've died out by now.

Such is the nature of the authoritarian. The will of the people doesn't mean jack shit unless you're in a democracy.
