The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That's part of the scariness: he has so far only gone after popular targets, increasing the "othering" of our society, but the true effects of his idiocy on his key white constituency won't be felt for months or years.
For that matter, has he done anything constructive for anybody that isn't the 1%? I mean that seriously. Even the most minute, actual benefit.

As of right now, all of his decrees seemingly exist for one purpose: to say "fuck you" to the things he hates. Which is easy. Especially when not thinking about the consequences, or at all.

But criticism of Trump needs to be done in awareness of the counterargument "but he did x for me," so it can be put in its proper context and be refuted meaningfully.

So Sean Spicer just used the shooting at a mosque in Quebec (at Muslim people that were praying peacefully and killed/wounded by a suspect who is French-Canadian) as justification for the Muslim ban.

Isn't Muslim ban supposed to be so "terrorists" stop shooting up WASP's rather than WASP's shooting "terrorists"?

Like... I don't think I understand. It's completely in opposition to what has happened in Quebec.

There was the Carrier deal, but that was a hollow gesture. I'm pretty sure at least some of the employees realize it's bullshit and that their jobs are doomed either way.

Not only that but then Trump denied ever promising the deal.

Well, he is doing exactly what he promised to do...except that he has no intention at all to "drain the swamp"...but then, if I remember correctly, he never actually promised that, he just kept claiming that Hillary was oh so corrupt.

Well, he also did a lot of promises that the life of the "little people" would be better, but since he never had a decent concept how to achieve this in the first place.....

These are not arguments. They're declarations of intent. Do not waste time debating them. They don't care.

He put out a YT video not long after being elected where he specifically mentioned draining the swamp, so yeah it's a good a promise as anything else he's said.

Well, he also did a lot of promises that the life of the "little people" would be better, but since he never had a decent concept how to achieve this in the first place.....

They don't care about how him having a carefully constructed plan to benefit them, it's about him making them FEEL like he can do it.

There was an article posted a few pages back detailing how a bunch of people in some white working class enclave really didn't follow the news at all (and presumably, know vry little about what's going in the world besides) but still had strong opinions about Trump "fixing things", getting their jobs back and "not taking shit from anybody", despite them not even keeping up with what Trump has been doing since he got elected they think he's doing a great job.

Like I've said for a while now, much of the time apathy is just the same as malice.

I know this is more related to the Racism thread but I'd like to note that the dipshit who shot the Mosque in Canada is a /pol/ regular and alt-right nuttjob.

So whenever someone claim the alt-right didn't do anything harmful or harmed anyone you can call them out on their bullshit.

I want to put together a big rebuttal of all of the popular anti-environmentalist arguments but I don't really know where to start.

So, in (sadly) hilarious news.

It was confirmed that the shooting in Quebec only had one suspect. And that the previously mentioned Muslim person was a witness not a suspect. Fox News updated their news article from "Shooter Was a Muslim". In doing so, it made a bunch of US bigots posts look hilarious when the article preview on facebook now doesn't mention a muslim shooter.

"Why did you let him in!"

Yes... why did we let the canadian in Canada? o_O

It goes further than that.

Anyone can claim "well, that person doesn't represent us" and sometimes be right about that if the event is being used to demonize a particular group (minorities most of the time), but the alt-right itself has always been a loathsome group of reactionaries, thugs, and manchildren. Everything they stand for is loathsome. That shooting is just a natural conclusion of someone stewing in a naturally hateful environment, so this absolutely does represent who they are.

/pol/ is on another circlejerk and digging out the original thread, apparently Bissomnette made a thread declaring his intent to do something in the nearest most frequently used mosque.

Besides, a college aged racist dipshits are /pol/'s primary userbase.

Dunno if they specifically used the words "Radical Muslim" but yes they did focus on one of the arrested individuals being Muslim at first, till it was confirmed he was a witness.

It was an attack by radicals on muslims, so both of those words are relevant. Which is apparently all they need.
