The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Sounds like the Senate Democrats may be planning to filibuster the SCOTUS nominee. This is going to get ugly.

When we talk about the ways in which elections are " rigged" we mean small, incremental changes that can tilt the balance in a particular direction. To date, nearly all changes to the traditional process have favored incumbants, which favor incumbant Democrats as well (one reason why such decisions got passed). A clear majority of voters will still carry the day.

Good on them. The Republicans stole that damn seat, they shouldn't just let them have it.

[up][up][up]Clear majority in swing states, for the moment.

But seriously, if it's Hardiman they need to take the win and keep their focus on the Executive Orders.

Yeah, if Trump fucks up the economy, his diehard base stays home, and 60%+ of the remaining voters want him out, all the typical GOP voter suppression tactics won't make up for weight of numbers. And that's assuming the Republicans don't try to primary him and/or one of the more principled ones makes a decent 3rd party effort.

No, because that seat was stolen from the Democrats in the first place. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, and the Trump regime has made it abundantly clear that they deserve not one ounce of cooperation from the Congressional Democrats.

Besides, the SCOTUS is too important for Trump to be allowed to appoint one of his monsters to it. If he nominates one of his usual anti-democratic bigots, the SCOTUS is screwed for a generation.

It's still got to be in states that can be swung, or else the next election will end up like the last one. And we've still got to get through four years.

I didn't give my rep. my address because I'm afraid it may lead to people coming after me. My rep. (Diane Black) is pretty pro-Trump. If people are being asked at borders if they support Trump, I have to wonder if my own rep won't try something with me.

They better. It seems like the bulk of the Democratic leadership has been MIA at this moment of crisis, waffling about negotiation and bipartisanship while we march in the streets.

As someone said, it's like the Republicans and Democrats were playing a board game. Only halfway through the game, the Republicans decided to get up, flip the table, and set the house on fire. And the Democrats are just still sitting there in the burning house, trying the play the game.

Time to fight back, guys. I didn't see any signs at the Women's March that said "Please Give Trump's Cabinet Nominees A Swift And Smooth Confirmation."

One thing is clear to me right now: Steve Ganon can't be allowed to continue to have the POTUS' ear.

They need to get Hardiman in the door and learn to choose their battles. That article from medium had made a very good point about how the Dems are exhausting themselves too quickly and too early, allowing Trump to coast on the public apathy that tends to mount the more used to the outrage they get.

[up][up][up][up] Even then, I feel the Senate Dems would be justified in blocking them. Turnabout is fair play. GOP blocked Garland for eight years, they deserve it.

[up] Do they really have the luxury of choosing their battles right now, though? The government is being burned down before our eyes. They can't give an inch.

I don't know if fighting a centerist SC nomination is going to help. The Republicans kill the filibuster and then they get whatever they want, perhaps someone worse.

I want resistance but I'm not convinced yet that the Dems shouldn't be picking their battles. The big ones on the table at the moment for appointments are Sessons and De Vos. (I am still uncertain about whether Tillerson should have been one of those battles.)

The Washington State Attorney General, who previously condemned the Muslim ban as unlawful and un-American, has announced he will be suing Trump over it.

He may be ignoring the law, but the law ain't ignoring him. We have yet to see how that situation shakes out.

I mean, the thing is, if the starting option you're given is the best you could ever hope for, the smart idea to me would be to take it, and then fight over something actually, you know, bad.

Like, this is if and only if the SCOTUS is centrist or even left. Devos is a much bigger issue. As is Sessions.

As representatives of the AU’s 53 member states met in Addis Ababa for a two-day summit, the chief of its commission said the bloc was entering “very turbulent times” after the US President’s election.

“The very country to which many of our people were taken as slaves during the transatlantic slave trade has now decided to ban refugees from some of our countries,” said Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

If Trump pulls out of the Paris Agreement, then I hope all the signatories slap us with a major carbon tax. Problem being that it would damage the US economy.
