Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Doubtful, if Trump starts crackdown hard enough to get Ottawa off its ass, it will be the kind of crackdown where Trump/the GOP will only care about the targets' brains insomuch as how they are splattered against the nearest wall or street corner. It would take massacres/unlawful executions, on a significant scale and against clearly targeted demographics, to truly open the Canadian (and Mexican) floodgates. By that point, Trump won't bother to chase anyone who he sees no value in.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Schumer seems to be finding a spine! He's vowed to vote against almost all of Trump's remaining cabinet nominees,
and here
he is on the verge of tears, condemning the Muslim ban as mean-spirited and un-American, promising to fight it tooth and nail.
Argentina is relatively lax, as far as I know the only problem would be if you have a criminal record.
1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVAnd on the notion of criminal records and crossing the Canadian border, if you do get caught trying to cross illegally, you are essentially banned from Canada for life. So, for anyone even semi-seriously thinking about it, it isn't worth it unless life and limb are at stake.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Thomas Hardiman is a likely choice for Supreme Court justice.
"and here he is on the verge of tears,"
And typically, Trump basically calls him a crybaby and faking it.

Hardiman also has the backing of Trump's closest judicial source: his sister.
Well, I guess a normal conservative getting in on nepotism is better than a maniac getting in on ideology. Dems don't have a huge issue with him, and he apparently doesn't have a Scalia type personality to influence other justices.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Trump may be intending to ignore the Supreme Court (and Congress) entirely, so a centrist pick for justice would be a bone thrown to the hungry dogs while he quietly poisons their meat.
This Medium.com article paints a rather scary picture of the administration's actions
: beheading the major departments of the executive branch and consolidating power into a shadow cabal that is accountable to no law, with its own private security and intelligence forces. The ultimate objective is to loot the country and fill the coffers of the President and his cronies with unimaginable wealth.
Who's going to stop them if they simply ignore the laws and the courts?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"To be frank, if they are going to openly defy the law and the courts, open rebellion is very possibly on the table.
Who does it and how, I leave open as a practical exercise.
I would rather the fight be won by legal means but if those become closed the options are limited.

The Andrew Jackson parallels are certainly becoming more apropos by the day, I tell you that much. He also flaunted the Supreme Court's ruling.
He's making a mockery of the rule of law. He needs to be stopped and removed from office now.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Well I called my Rep's office and used a script saying I'm against the Muslim ban. I got a secretary who essentially gave their own script justifying the EO. There was a little back and forth, but it wasn't a disaster. I wasn't calling to argue and ended the call once my message was across. She used Obama's EO from 2011 as a justification, btw. She sked for my name and address too, but I just gave my name and town.
Now I just need to call my senators. Bob Corker has issues with the EO but I don't know if he really opposes it.
Jackson isn't a good comparison because, to start with, he actually had the credentials to back up his macho talk, and had significant government and military experience prior to taking office. Trump is just Trump, and that's what's alarming about him.
Incidentally, for those of you wondering how congressleople vote relative to Trump, here's 538's tracker.
Sanders, Warren, and surprisingly Booker and among the least supportive senators so far. Schumer has been in the middle of the democratic pack, and Feinstein thus far has been a downright collaborator.

Maddowblog: The Trump organization has declared the media as 'an opposition party'
and appears to be treating it as even more of an enemy than the Democrats. This is apparently because the media is doing its actual job of calling out the Trump team's mauling of the concept of facts.
