The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm getting ads in Russian and ads for a John Malkovich fashion website, of all things.

Yeah, I'm making a conscious choice to boycott visiting the US. And, unlike the morons who tried to "boycott" Hamilton and Starbucks, I actually have the option to visit the US (as my parents own a vacation rental in North Carolina), and I choose not to. I actually cancelled a vacation in May that I had planned. If I got asked at the border if I liked Trump, I probably wouldn't make it in.

So why is Starbucks being boycotted? I thought people would be happy that the refugees are finding employment and thus being more able to integrate properly.

"Yup. That tasted purple."

[up][up]It was a while back. Starbucks said something against Trump or one of Trump's ideas or something, so some of Trump's supporters had the brilliant idea of "boycotting" Starbucks by ordering coffee and saying their name was Trump. It didn't work. The same people tried to "boycott" Hamilton by trying to buy tickets and then not go. When the show is sold out for years.

The people boycotting Hamilton also harassed a bunch of businesses and the mayor's office...in Hamilton, Ontario, because they're apparently blind and incapable of actually looking up anything.

It is rather darkly amusing how the outcry against Obama's "big government intrusion into our personal liberties" has fallen silent when someone who actually does those things takes center stage.

I know right? It is telling like conspiracy theory groups, specially like the ones in Prison Planet, who always were against anything that gives the government more power over the people are silent when it comes to Trump overreaching and trying to screw the rights of US citizens or legal immigrants.

It isn't even double think, it is no think at all.

You know, part of me's tempted to just take some survival classes and spend the rest of my live roughing it out in the woods, because at least that way, I wouldn't have to worry about society fucking things up for me. (Not for a while anyway.) Of course, what I really want to do is move to Canada, but unless they've looking for someone with a Bachelor's in Theater, there's not much chance of me getting in short of illegal immigration. Though given what's going on nowadays, a straight white man becoming an illegal immigrant would certainly deliver some delicious irony if nothing else.tongue

[up]Yeah, with an Undergrad degree, you only chance of getting into Canada as a permanent resident is to either get a job up here beforehand (very difficult, even for those with specialized degrees), marry a Canadian citizen, or claim refugee status (the US isn't that bad as far as Ottawa is concerned....yet).

A more temporary measure would be to get accepted as an international student, that would give you a few years at least. But that isn't cheap/easy...

Everyone, especially on the right, talks about how easy it is to immigrate to countries like Canada and the US legally. But its actually really damn hard.

EDIT: However, Canada does have a long history of looking the other way when draft dodgers fled the US in Vietnam and the Civil War. That policy died with the American draft though.

I have occasionally found myself half-seriously wondering how hard it is to sneak across the Canadian border.

I mean, there's a lot of border, right? They can't guard the whole thing.

There are sensors spread across most of the thing, you will be detected at some point. Non-Militarized does not mean unguarded (and both sides work quite well together). And the most isolated areas along the border....aren't that hospitable to human life. Slipping across is one thing, staying hidden is another.

The entire border is either rigged with motion sensors, is actively patrolled, or is literally impossible to sneak across. (Good luck trying to sneak across the Niagara River south of Niagara on the Lake). There was a guy who did a photo shoot all the way along the border a year or so back. Every single time he stopped to take pictures, somewhere he thought he was in the middle of nowhere, someone showed up in 10 minutes. And these are places that are hours away from any towns or villages. Or even roads in a couple cases.

You aren't likely to get shot or anything, but they're likely to notice something.

I'll say this again to people who are seriously considering emigration: unless Canada changes things to make it easier for people to move there, give priority to those who are most likely to be in danger of life and safety under the new regime.

[up][up]At this point, barely anyone can really emigrate if they tried anyway, but I get what you mean. What I am going to try is seeing if I can go get my Theater Masters (or anything really,) in Canada, because even a few years over there is better than none. The only thing stopping me is that the eligibility test is down right now for scheduled maintenance, but I'm going to be doing it as soon as it's back up.

Bingo, even if Canada decides that the US is fundamentally safe, certain groups would be given priority over others. Now, if Trump starts cracking down on his opponents wholesale, the floodgates might open wider.

However, there are regions in the US that might be considered safe while other parts are not, and Canada is well within its rights to encourage American refugees to internally displace (if possible) while this is the case.
