The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If they're not reading the news then how they do know what Trump is doing exactly? :/

[up][up][up]that's rather harsh. I can understand why they wouldn't watch the news. They live in the middle of nowhere. Nothing that happens anywhere affects them directly.

Though I suppose that with all the unemployment, they'd have enough time to get good or at least varied information. They get Internet, right?

[up][up][up]People are being rounded up on the basis of nationality, the security/intelligence services are being politicized, and the rule of law is being flaunted. And they accept this, or even support it.

That's how genocide happens. They'd either cheer or look away if people were being murdered by the thousands.

@170642: This is why I have to chuckle about people wondering when Trump's supporters are going to wake up to reality; short answer, it is never going to happen. The ones that are not virulent bigots or apathetic, vengeful nihilists might as well be living on another planet. When the sum total of their life is "vote R, all media are liars selling falsehoods, and the rest of the world ends at my front yard fence", there is no avenue for reaching them, let alone getting them to consider anything they do not like. For most intents and purposes, they might as well be detached from reality, seeming how they only occasionally intersect the rest of the world anyway.

that's rather harsh. I can understand why they wouldn't watch the news. They live in the middle of nowhere. Nothing that happens anywhere affects them directly.

If they have the power to affect the country, they should care about what's going on in it. You don't just vote and then not check what the politician is doing, even if it's just listening to the radio or watching tv when you get back home from work. SOMETHING.

A great many of the grunts voted for Trump and love him to death. I wouldn't trust them.
Well, about half of the military personnel are from the south (as of 2013 at least) and the bullying leader (so long as he's keeping the other people down) probably appeals to them. (New York, the rest of the Northeast, and California have less than 15% representation).

That said, military personnel have better discretion shooting at people abroad than the police do at home so its anyone's guess.

A new, horrifying detail from this article (emphasis added):

Hassan M. Ahmad, an immigration attorney in Virginia, says that in the past, he’s heard of clients who have been pressured into signing Form I-407, which allows green card holders to abandon their legal permanent residency. “Don’t sign it,” says Ahmad – who cautions that he hasn’t heard of this happening at airports yet, but is urging immigrants to be careful moving forward. “It’s important that green card holders not give up their rights to a hearing,” he says. That hearing, says Ahmad, could result in getting part of Trump’s executive order declared invalid.

So be careful and don't sign anything if you don't know what it is.

Perhaps they are frequenting forums and/or social media sites.

Social media sites, occasionally yes but forums? I really doubt it.

The article is describing basically the same kind of working class white enclave we've heard about multiple times already. They are very detached from what is going on in the rest of the US, never mind the rest of the world beyond it. Maybe they'll have some generic non-complaint about "how the world is going to shit", but won't be able to give an informed answer as to what that is exactly, outside of their job situation being bad. And they say he's "doing great" despite the fact that they have little idea of anything he's doing and simply don't care.

Case in point:

“I don’t know what’s going on, I have no idea,” said Doreen Mc Vay, 47, a waitress in Angelo’s diner in Sterling Heights, a city within Macomb County that Trump visited two days before the election and where he predicted – accurately, as it turned out – that he would enjoy a Brexit-like victory. She spends her days serving fried pierogies to car workers, and the only time she gets to take in current affairs is out of the corner of her eye on the diner TV or in rare moments spent on Facebook.

That doesn’t stop her from feeling passionate about Trump in the White House. “The world is going to hell in a handbasket, and from what I’ve seen he’s going to fix it. Sure, he’s blunt and says what he thinks, but he doesn’t take any shit.”

In other words, vapid feels-based bullshit with no substance to it. How can you be passionate about a man when you have no knowledge of what he's up to in the White House and how it's affecting the country? They fell hook line and sinker for his snake oil. And they're going to pay the price.

If nothing else, the Macomb v. Media article is a morbidly fascinating case study on the people whom support autocracies. All this news should be a boon to historians of the 1930s. Effectively, a sort of community that doesn't include the people outside your front porch or the greasy spoon. An ironic nationalism built off of a lack of a national community...
By the way, the stages of genocide are:

  • Classification—People are divided into "us and them".
  • Symbolization—"When combined with hatred, symbols may be forced upon unwilling members of pariah groups..."
  • Dehumanization—"One group denies the humanity of the other group. Members of it are equated with animals, vermin, insects, or diseases."
  • Organization—"Genocide is always organized... Special army units or militias are often trained and armed..."
  • Polarization—"Hate groups broadcast polarizing propaganda..."
  • Preparation—"Victims are identified and separated out because of their ethnic or religious identity..."
  • Extermination—"It is 'extermination' to the killers because they do not believe their victims to be fully human".
  • Denial—"The perpetrators... deny that they committed any crimes..."

[up]And we're going to pay the price. They may never know what they lost....

Remember while 50% of the military may have voted for Trump that's mainly the grunts, the officer level folks aren't fans of Trump and they're the ones giving the orders. Sure the grunts could rebel against orders but that's highly unlikely, following orders is kinda drilled into people in the military.

It's the last part that really gets me. If you really think genocide was the right thing to do, why hide it? Be like the Romans, the Hebrews, etc. They weren't ashamed of doing what they thought was right.

The first military operation approved by Trump has been underway. A raid on Al Qaeda.

One American dead and three wounded. 30+ civilians were also killed, 10 of them being women or children.

He said he was going to kill civilians and families and he is.

Oh really when?

Hah, Michael Flynn Jr., that piece of shit who's the son of Trump's National Security advisor, shut down his twitter account hours after referring to Trump's ban as a "Muslim ban"

Which it is, but Trump's been adamant that his ban isnt an immigration ban.

What a piece of shit. Fuck Flynn Jr.
