Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Let's not do that, because then that would give Trump an excuse to declare martial law.
Be afraid. This isn't just Trump being Trump. This is a classic autocrat move—you or your allies take control of the major media outlets, eliminating negative press coverage. The Nazis did it, Putin did it...now Trump's threatening to do it.
Rule One: Believe the autocrat.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Kind of a Skyrim-esque world, except set in a direct democracy, where voting is mandatory. There's actually three villains: the aforementioned political one, and the leaders of both of the local big religions, who are each vying to be the The Man Behind the Man to the political villain.

Ah, nice.
Well, I have a similar one but it's future fantasy, set in the real world affected by Trump's policies (Under construction BTW)

On a related note: Here's the NYTimes subscription page, for anyone who's interested...
There's special rates for students, $1/week, although I don't know if that's applicable outside the US.

Cripes. Attorneys at Dulles, armed with a federal court order allowing them to see the detainees, are told by the CBP that "it's not going to happen.
They're reportedly seeking a contempt of court order.
The rule of law is being endangered. We all knew it would be—but I didn't realize it was going to happen so fast.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Hell, I might finally subscribe to the Times. Been mooching their ten free articles for years because it hardly seems worth it to pay money to read a single columnist. But now, with the very existence of independent journalism under threat? It may be one of the best possible uses of my money.

I think this will be the message the court will give to the jackasses of the CBP if they don't comply or else the marshalls will go tear them apart (LISA).

Assuming the National Guard(s) don't mutiny because so many soldiers (and LE Os) support Trump.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Senate Democrats intend to introduce legislation that would repeal the Fuhrer's Muslim ban.
Good! That's what I was just saying they should do. (And they also implied that this whole disaster might compel them to be a little less forthcoming with the cabinet nominees—which they should have been doing already, but better late than never.)
It's still going to need bipartisan support to get passed, though, and I don't know how likely it is that they'll be able to pick up the necessary votes in the Senate, let alone the House.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent.""Nah man, they'll resist, even going rogue."
Well, yes and no. The politically aware will, but all it takes is some grunts with guns and those guys will either be cowed or dead. The people that really matter, in the Might Makes Right interpretation of power, are all pro-Trump.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."The best hope is that Trump's policies make life so awful even for his die-hard supporters that he can't muster up enough people to go along with his idiotic ideas.

In summary - as far as Republican voters outside the beltway are concerned, Trump is doing a fantastic job. And it's not like they are getting this opinion from Fox News or a right wing echo chamber - they aren't reading the news at all.
