Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think there may be a number of airports disobeying the court order.
Remember how him and his cronies confidently talk about "eight years?" Not four. Not "four or more." Eight.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Well, we'll see.
I think it depends on whether or not the Rust Belt states that swung red this election decided that Trump has failed them or not, and states like Florida, NC, or Ohio swinging blue or not. It be hilarious if we would be able to snag a couple of red states too, but we were expecting a landslide this cycle and look where that got us (I maintain though that James Comey is my current scapegoat)
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas EdisonNo, premature pessimism is saying "All hail the King forevermore." This is admitting the possibility that there might not be a real election. It IS a possibility, no matter how optimistic you want to be, it's within the bounds of reality that the U.S. itself MIGHT not exist. It is nowhere near certain, but if we don't acknowledge the possibility, brainstorm how it can happen and find counters, we MIGHT get blindsided.
I'm all for pushing on and fighting the good fight, but admitting we're walking a tightrope tends to make us more careful to fight smart.

And fight them back with all their strengths maybe up to a standstill.
Come on guys, you're better than that, I'm not saying I'm rejecting the possibility but the spirit to do the right thing always lingers here and there, if we use it strongly, then a future will be ensured.

The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy. That's why I say wait and see how the enforcement agencies and the military swing. If the man's willing to lie and create whole new words for it, the support of the military and alphabet agencies might make him overlook how the rest of us feel.
Remember: The economy's in a precarious position, and it's only going to get worse in the future if we don't get a handle on automation, or reform the economy to take jobs out of the equation. And, unfortunately, the people like Trump are the ones pushing harder for automation. If they can hold on to power long enough to automate the majority of the economy, they will never need to heed us again. All they'd need was enough crackers to keep hackers out of their systems, and the military's loyalty, and they could forcibly downsize the rest of the populace if they needed to.
" I'm not saying I'm rejecting the possibility but the spirit to do the right thing always lingers here and there"
Not in Republicans.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."I try to remain hopeful, but agreed—hanging our hopes on the Republicans developing a conscience is a fool's gambit. They have no conscience.
As if I needed more reason to love the ACLU right now.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."hahahahaha
Sean Spicer just retweeted the onion, unironically.
LAWL.
New Survey coming this weekend!
Heh.
Aheh.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA
Oh dear me. Spicer is just the gift that keeps on giving, isn't he? Any chance of that being an actual self-deprecating joke on his part?

Then they'd better start stepping up right here, right now. Denouncing the Muslim ban would be a good start.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Also, in case any of us needed further reason to be morally revolted by the Muslim ban, a woman at Dulles Airport was separated from her five-year-old son for hours when he was detained by officials.
Read those words again. US officials detained a five-year-old boy for hours, refusing to let his mother see him...why? Is the five-year-old a terrorism suspect?
They are now reunited, thankfully. But how many others are there? I've also seen reports that other detainees included infants.
It's getting harder and harder to tell Onion headlines apart from real headlines, I tell you that much.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Moreover, in a legitimately open and free democracy you can't expect one party to win every time. They can hold onto it for a while, but unless they stack the system and pervert it to guarantee they win regardless of what happens, power trades hands.
So having that be literally the difference between a nihilistic black hole of a government and an at least passable one is just not acceptable because if that becomes the choice there is a good chance it will happen, as it has now.

From an extremely cynical perspective, yes - children must be considered just as deadly terrorist suspects and adults because we naturally assume that they are innocent, allowing for potential terrorists to exploit this vulnerable flaw in the human psyche.
By all means, ISIS and al-Qaeda's leadership must be practically drunk with glee by this point. They, like the Joker, have taken the best and brought them down to the lowest.
What's the situation at airports in Dem controlled states right now? Because if they're defying the court order to let people though and thus illegally detaining them it's time for the local police to be sent in, if the local police refuse to follow the court order Thai situation may boil over into the national guard being mobilised to spring people from airport prisons.

Because Trump is a thin-skinned narcissist, and can't stand the idea that people don't adulate him. A smart villain would ignore the protesters or give them a small victory. Trump will throw a tantrum. In addition, his "policies" really are crap, and many of his voters already have buyer's remorse, so while he's flailing around, it's easier to drop support
Not that this will be easy, or victory is guaranteed. But they can't have everything their own way.
