The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

People here seem to be asking why no one is doing all they can to stop the Trump administration... except the majority of his actual opponents are doing all they legally can. The problem is that Trump is still President and only Congress, which is controlled by the Republicans, can take that away from him. The Republicans won't do that unless Trump actually threatens their own power because at the moment, he's pushing all the things they ever dreamed of and serves as the perfect patsy when things invariably go to shit. We need to ensure that we, and everyone protesting against Trump, vote for Democrats in the 2018 midterms.

[up][up]I'm not sure about that, really. There's a breaking point here, where Trump becomes unpredictable and tyrannical enough that he becomes a threat to the GOP's power- where Pence appears to them as a considerably more attractive prospect. Where Trump becomes unpopular enough that impeaching him would improve their chances of re-election.

[up][up]If the leaks are in any way true, than Pence and the GOP are already planning on booting Trump out the door the second he no longer suits their purposes. In other worlds, they're all fucking Starscreams.

[up][up][up][up]I keep wondering if that's the plan, or if the modern GOP has finally gone round the bend. For example, Republicans continue gerrymandering efforts. The sane (not good) Republican officials may be trying to milk Trump for all he's worth before dumping his ass, but I think there's a real possibility that they just don't see anything wrong, and are trying to consolidate power around our Dear Leader.

The whole thing is something of a Xanatos Gambit too. If there really are fewer terrorist attacks in the US (even if they were already really rare) they can claim "see, what did I tell you?" but if there are more terrorist attacks they can still go "see? these are dangerous people!". This sucks all around.

Worth noting: so far, a whopping three GOP leaders have spoken out against the ban. Senator Ben Sasse issued a pretty damn weaksauce criticism of the ban, Rep. Charlie Dent (who represents a sizable Syrian community) urged the administration to halt the order, and Rep. Justin Amash also issued a fairly weak condemnation.

So, that's three GOP politicians who have expressed mild disappointment at this atrocity. Where's the rest of them? Ryan, McConnell, Pence...so many of them condemned the idea before Trump got the nomination. Funny how they seem to have plum forgotten about their principles once he was elected. (Especially Pence. Evil bastard—one minute he's calling it grossly unconstitutional, the next he's applauding it.)

@Hextar: Strikes are done to get people's attention. And preventing them from traveling is one of the surest ways to get their attention. Plus, it's done peacefully, so they're literally not hurting anyone. It sounds like you came into this thread to just complain about things, so I have to ask what even was the reason you came in here.

Because yeah, the taxi strikes are massively inconvenient, but it's the clearest way they have to say that they think something is wrong. And yeah, lawyers may be thinking about what representing these people will do for their career, but it's still resulting in them doing something good for people who are getting screwed over by a capricious whim of a selfish president. Are we going to question the motives of every one of them, and ignore the results of the actions they chose to take?

Rogue POTUS Staff‏ @Rogue POTUS Staff Unholy Trinity insistence to monitor Putin call was due to concern POTUS hasn't told full story about Putin attempts at blackmail.

After call, Unholy Trinity do not seem to have had any fears allayed. POTUS behavior during call said to be suspicious. POTU Sindistress

Unholy Trinity urging POTUS that if Putin is compromising him to allow them to help. POTUS continues to deny, despite firm intelligence.

Bannon says to take POTUS at his word. Probably has more to do w/ his attempts to control WH over Priebus. Not believed to know anything.

That's kind of how strikes work though, isn't it? You force people to pay attention.

I'm mildly encouraged that people at work were surprised (and not in a good way) that Trump was actually carrying out his Muslim ban. I was... less encouraged when they laughed at how angry I was. But at least they're not cheering him on. When it affects them- and you can't screw around with healthcare and social security and the economy without making waves- they might care more.

Gotta agree with what Ace Of Spades said. It's an act of protest and public defiance, letting it be known that they condemn this injustice. Civil disobedience is a time-honored tradition, no matter how much the Republicans may attempt to criminalize it. (And this isn't even really civil disobedience—it's denial of service, which they have every right to do.)

Yeah, it's going to inconvenience the hell out of a lot of travelers at JFK—but they're still going to be a hell of a lot less inconvenienced than the innocent refugees who are being detained or deported back to countries that want to murder them.

I've been to that airport. It's on the subway system and you can rent a car. It would be one crappy airport if literally the only way to leave was by taxi.

So, looking at the changes Trump made to turn the Oval Office as gold as possible in as short a time as possible, it looks to me like he's using....

it'll be interesting to see how tacky he makes the room when he gets around to a proper redesign instead of pulling out anything vaguely gold-coloured from previous presidencies.

Also, I know it is a stereotype but one borne out by facts, but cab drivers are often immigrants, and Muslim immigrants and/or immigrants from the countries named in the executive order at that. So the order likely affects a lot of them as well as others they know.

Really don't trust that 'rogue POTUS staff' twitter. Because, like, if it was real, the administration would be aware by now that someone in their staff are doing this, and then they'd be accordingly careful. They wouldn't say stuff like 'hey Trump, if Russia has dirt on you, why don't you tell us what it is?' Unless they were very certain they wouldn't be overheard. And if they did, posting about that conversation would be unwise, since it would be telling them that the leak was coming form someone who heard that.

No need to worry about stereotypes this time—that's their stated reason.

Organizations including the AFT Union and New York Taxi Workers Alliance publicly announced their support for the protest.

"Our 19,000-member-strong union stands firmly opposed to Donald Trump's Muslim ban. As an organization whose membership is largely Muslim, a workforce that's almost universally immigrant, and a working-class movement that is rooted in the defense of the oppressed, we say no to this inhumane and unconstitutional ban," the NYTWA said in a statement.

"We stand in solidarity with all protesting at JFK #Terminal4 & airports across the country. We are a country of immigrants, we stand together," AFT union wrote on Twitter.

They've said that Bannon is actively hunting them down and know about the account. It's likely that someone who was there or overheard told someone they knew who told them. It could even be someone very high up who let it slip. Someone that's close to Priebus who according to the account doesn't even want to be there.
