The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump has ordered his Joint Chiefs to give him a plan to defeat ISIS in 30 days.

So I guess the problem was that they didn't realize they should be trying to come up with a way to beat ISIS. Glad we have Trump set them straight on that.

[up][up][up]Its 'have a plan in 30 days' not 'have a plan to win within 30 days' I think

California seems to be ceding from the Union is all but name. I've been thinking that as an economic super power all on their own, the Golden State can take a look around before saying, "We don't actually have to do what you say.'' Just take their ball and go home.
While actual secession is out of the question, a plan to pretty much opt out of federal taxes sounds pretty appealing. But even that could be a double-edged sword, because there are likely federal programs that still actually do good things and would benefit from the money (although if that is the case, state republicans will jump on board in an instant).

On the other hand, I certainly have no faith in the current administration to do anything than funnel it into their own pockets. Plus, that money could be used to bolster California's own programs. But I have no idea of the legality of it, whether it could even be done straight up, or if it would require some roundabout method.

So if they fail to deliver, presumably he just cans the lot of them. Whatever they come up with better be good. (Of course, whatever they're forced to come up with will probably just be slapdash and short-sighted, causing more long-term harm than good. Which should suit the Trump Administration right down to the ground.)

A woman at JFK attempted to commit suicide rather than be deported back to Chile.

Not going to link to his Twitter, but David Duke is very pleased with how this year is going so far. (Oh, and both he and Richard "Ow My Face" Spencer have been complimenting Tulsi Gabbard, in case we needed more reason to primary her first chance we get.)

Trump implemented a lifetime ban on foreign lobbying and a 5 year ban on other lobbying.

He's on a power trip is what it is. He must be so high off the ability to just sign a piece of paper and implement whatever horrible shit he wants, without having to go through that whole pesky "democracy" song and dance.

Which is why the Congressional Democrats need to find their spines and start contesting some of this crap. The Muslim ban needs to end now. Not later, now. Lives are literally on the line.

Dozens of attorneys are arriving at JFK Airport to try to help the detainees

Probably had to stop themselves from creaming their pants, too.

The current state of affairs strikes me as one that's likely to come crashing down on his head. There's entirely too much pissing off everyone and too little actually thinking things through going on for this to be sustainable.

He strikes me as genuinely ignorant of why most presidents don't just executive order everything.

[up][up] Well, I doubt the detainees exactly have a lot of money to pay legal bills with. I think that almost all of them are doing this pro bono for the time being. I'm seeing pictures of lawyers literally making signs that say "Immigration Lawyer" so that anyone who needs help can come up to them and get it.

There are also attempts to crowdfund for the inevitable legal bills. This is an act of kindness and patriotism, not greed.

And working pro bono is a great way to build a name for yourself. Do some good deeds, and then make money later.

Economic superpower is a little strong of a term for California. Major power, sure, but not superpower. By nominal GDP, California is roughly equal to France (#6, but the gap between #2 (China) and #3 (Japan) is huge). When you use Purchasing Power Parity, it drops to right between #10 (UK) and #11 (Mexico, almost tied with Italy). It's nowhere near the big three economic power (USA, China, and the EU as a whole).

Honestly, if they do good work (like preventing even one person from being unlawfully deported), I have no issue with them advancing their own self interest.

[up][up][up] That's an extremely cynical outlook, to say the least. These attorneys are taking time and money out of their own lives to try and help the most vulnerable among us, and in doing so opening themselves up to any number of possible repercussions from bigots—or the government.

How about the hundreds of protestors gathered outside, demanding the immediate release of the innocent detainees? Are they also just "piranhas?"

Lawyers helping people for name recognition and lawyers helping people out of the goodness of their hearts both result in fewer people suffering at JFK, so.

It's been fun.

Exactly. Greed and naked self-interest aren't what motivate you to oppose Trump. They're what motivate you to join him.

Also, wow—the NYC Taxi Workers just called for a work stoppage, starting now. No pickups or dropoffs at JFK Airport.

What the hell ever happened to "give me your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free"? If nothing else, that's what I think of when I think "what is the American ideal?" and Trump has been shitting all over that.
