Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

On the other hand, I certainly have no faith in the current administration to do anything than funnel it into their own pockets. Plus, that money could be used to bolster California's own programs. But I have no idea of the legality of it, whether it could even be done straight up, or if it would require some roundabout method.

So if they fail to deliver, presumably he just cans the lot of them. Whatever they come up with better be good. (Of course, whatever they're forced to come up with will probably just be slapdash and short-sighted, causing more long-term harm than good. Which should suit the Trump Administration right down to the ground.)
A woman at JFK attempted to commit suicide rather than be deported back to Chile.
Not going to link to his Twitter, but David Duke is very pleased with how this year is going so far. (Oh, and both he and Richard "Ow My Face" Spencer have been complimenting Tulsi Gabbard, in case we needed more reason to primary her first chance we get.)
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Trump implemented a lifetime ban on foreign lobbying and a 5 year ban on other lobbying.
He's on a power trip is what it is. He must be so high off the ability to just sign a piece of paper and implement whatever horrible shit he wants, without having to go through that whole pesky "democracy" song and dance.
Which is why the Congressional Democrats need to find their spines and start contesting some of this crap. The Muslim ban needs to end now. Not later, now. Lives are literally on the line.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."The current state of affairs strikes me as one that's likely to come crashing down on his head. There's entirely too much pissing off everyone and too little actually thinking things through going on for this to be sustainable.
He strikes me as genuinely ignorant of why most presidents don't just executive order everything.

Well, I doubt the detainees exactly have a lot of money to pay legal bills with. I think that almost all of them are doing this pro bono for the time being. I'm seeing pictures of lawyers literally making signs that say "Immigration Lawyer" so that anyone who needs help can come up to them and get it.
There are also attempts to crowdfund for the inevitable legal bills. This is an act of kindness and patriotism, not greed.

That's an extremely cynical outlook, to say the least. These attorneys are taking time and money out of their own lives to try and help the most vulnerable among us, and in doing so opening themselves up to any number of possible repercussions from bigots—or the government.
How about the hundreds of protestors gathered outside, demanding the immediate release of the innocent detainees? Are they also just "piranhas?"
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Exactly. Greed and naked self-interest aren't what motivate you to oppose Trump. They're what motivate you to join him.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Speaking of good lawyers, I've donated a little to Melanie Gleason.
She's helping migrant workers.
What the hell ever happened to "give me your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free"? If nothing else, that's what I think of when I think "what is the American ideal?" and Trump has been shitting all over that.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas Edison

Trump has ordered his Joint Chiefs to give him a plan to defeat ISIS in 30 days.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."
