The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Garcon and Angelus look like they enjoy nuclear things so much that they even have gas masks as avatars. XD

On a serious note, I do believe China will make the right choice in the end though.

I also don't think that a real large-scale war between China and America is going to end up with China's victory, but if it does happen, America isn't going to come out of it unscathed, especially its credibility. America is going to be dead diplomatically. Yup, America is going to end up like Putin's much larger and powerful version of North Korea. Not to mention do you guys really want to end up like Imperial Japan whose greatest accomplishment is probably making China holds the higher moral ground?

I don't think China is going to start a war. As for Trump, I have no idea.

If the US actually starts a war, there will be a direct attack on it, one way or another.

[up] Agreed.

And keep in mind, even if China never manages to hit the continental United States, they could definitely hit Hawaii.

Can anyone tell me how strong the anti-Japanese sentiment during WWII?

I was wondering because it feels like anti-Muslim sentiment isn't as strong as anti-Japanese sentiment then.

Note that even a limited nuclear exchange between say, Pakistan and India, would still kill a lot of people around the world. The dust thrown into the atmosphere would cause a small nuclear winter, and that means famine.

[up]Pretty fucking strong, a non-insignificant minority (~20% IIRC) of the American population wanted to exterminate the population of the Home Islands in 1945.

If the US initiates a first strike, China is simply screwed, not much it can do besides destroying US bases and Allies in Asia.

As far as a war with China goes, the US wouldn't be starting in the sense of firing the first shot, they'd just be starting it by declaring intent to station troops on Taiwan and supporting Taiwanese independence, a red line which would almost certainly result in China invading Taiwan to preempt America troop deployment, and the United States declaring war on China using the defense of Taiwan as a Casus Belli. If China fails to preempt US troop movement, then nuclear weapons get based there and Taiwan is permanently out of China's grasp.

Starting wars without technically starting them is far easier than you might think, and that's terrifying.

The ensuing war would be won by the United States, but likely at great cost, and might very well spell the end of the American Empire in the same way World War II was the end of the British Empire. Russia meanwhile remains happily neutral watching its two greatest geopolitical rivals break each others' backs, and the 21st century ends up being a Eurasian century by virtue of Russia being the only great power left standing.

That's what it felt like when Dr. Seuss had made political cartoons denouncing America's unwillingness to bring in Jewish refugees (sound familliar?) while in the same period having another one with anti-Japanese American sentiment.

Information on what to do if the ICE brownshirts show up at your door.

In retaliation to the idea of the Fuhrer cutting their federal funding, California is looking into ways to essentially stop paying taxes to the government. Which is significant, because as a donor state, California actually pays more to the government than the government pays to them.

Good for Canada.

(Also, it'd be nice if that sentiment applied to disabled people.)

We've also boosted funding for reproductive health, and the Public Safety Minister essentially said "fuck that" when asked about torture.

[up]Those who are unsafe in their home countries (to a particularly severe extent) because of (or aggravated by) a disability can apply to be a refugee in Canada. Though unfortunately the odds are quite low. And if I were a religious man, I'd pray the a day never comes when American citizens/residents can make a legitimate claim for refugee status in Canada (or Mexico) never comes. But hope is scarce commodity these days...

Should be noted however, that we have two Trumpesque politicians trying to take over the Conservative Party up here. One is a crude reality TV star with a tough guy image and no empathy (he's stayed away from racism for the most part though) and the other is essentially Canada's biggest Trump fangirl, and is running on a campaign of constant racial/xenophobic dog whistles. The former has been doing quite well in the leadership polls to. So I'm not sure how long this will last.

Canada, for all its flaws, is now more than ever the Good Counterpart to the States.

Also, I was referring to the fact that, if I understand correctly, it's nearly impossible for a disabled person to immigrate to Canada. I'm glad to hear that people applying as refugees at least have a chance, though the fact that it's a low chance is certainly disheartening.

EDIT: Oh. Yuck. Uh, you guys hold your ground up there, okay? The last thing we need is for Canada to go the way of the US. That would be like the ultimate defilement.

Also, word of advice: start vetting those candidates for connections to Russia now rather than later.

@Rational, @bluefish: Unfortunately, Canada is to the United States what Ukraine is to Russia: Incapable of having an independent foreign policy due to the cruel realities of geopolitics. Either Canada or Mexico trying to pursue geopolitical independence from the United States would see them crushed like a bug, Trump or no Trump.

Eh, we've done minor stuff. We've had warm relations with Cuba for decades (hey, gotta go somewhere in the winter), stayed out of Vietnam and Iraq 2, and have stood up to D.C. over minor trade incidents.

[up][up]Yeah, immigrating with a health issue that's seen as putting a burden on the Canadian healthcare system is next to impossible. Not sure what the implications for mental issues are, especially if you have a job lined up/can still reasonably function.

What role could Keystone XL play if the White House becomes dissatisfied with some Canadian policy?

Or for that matter, in a deal with the devil, could the pipeline support Canada's current direction in some fashion?

[up][up] Minor stuff yes, but nothing that really crosses the line. Which is why if the US goes down, Canada goes with it.

Oh absolutely. We won't last a minute if our largest trading partner goes tits up.

[up][up]Trump needs Keystone, but we could sell the oil elsewhere. It would be rough, but Trump has little to gain from cutting that off.

And yes, keeping the Canadian economy healthy and growing would do wonders to keep populism suppressed. We have no choice but to get in bed with Trump, but damn if we won't take a shower afterwards...

California seems to be ceding from the Union is all but name. I've been thinking that as an economic super power all on their own, the Golden State can take a look around before saying, "We don't actually have to do what you say.''

Just take their ball and go home.
