Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

They can try but I'd love to see their ancient anti ship missiles try and get through modern defenses.
And like I've said multiple times before, we're moving most of our cheap manufacturing to the rest of SEA. Their economic ties to us are dwindling.

Oh really when?Because obviously WWIII will averted as always...that is, if the conflict it's a regional one.
You're pointing to yourself, not R Bluefish.
China is one of the world's foremost superpowers. Are we seriously not concerned about the fact that we're apparently going to war with them? Whether we outmatch them or not, the conflict would be sure to be nightmarish from a humanitarian perspective - to say nothing of what happens when various allies start to weigh in and the war spreads.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Guys, China doesn't have any hold on us. They're the ones completely dependent on us for economic reasons, not the other way around.
It's why all the claims of China stealing our jobs or being a threat to our economy or something something debt is bullshit.
They aren't one of the foremost superpowers is the thing. They can't support their military just existing let alone in combat and they struggle to recreate technology from the 80s even with examples and blueprints in hand.

Oh really when?My thoughts: With any luck, China won't even try and they're just saber rattling, and if they do try, they might well get thomped, but I'd really rather not risk it any case. Because even if it isn't much of a war, a war's still a war. (And nevermind that we might be underestimating just how far they're really willing to go...)
I don't doubt that they'd be no match for us if it came to that...but doesn't that just mean countless Chinese soldiers and civilians being butchered by the US military? Again, I'm thinking of the humanitarian angle more than anything else. War, even one-sided war, is inherently destructive to human life.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Given all of Trump's anti-China rhetoric, it's weird that he's also approving ETP's two pipelines which are going to be selling a lot of oil to China.
The coal workers who voted for Trump should be kicking themselves over this, considering China is a huge customer of US coal.

Disgusted, but not surprisedFact is that we didn't have to worry for 25 years that any of the Superpowers would start to attack each other...well, there was a small worry over the Ukraine, but we could be secure that the EU and the US would stay halfway reasonable, even if Putin wasn't. But now?
And the US shouldn't feel so secure...remember Pearl Harbor? Remember 9/11? A truly determined enemy can and will hurt the US deeply.
Basically this. I fear we're getting very complacent here. The idea of entering a full-blown military conflict with China should scare the piss out of all of us, regardless of nationality, and regardless of how much we may think we outmatch them.
Yes. In war, people on the winning side still die. To say nothing of the losing side. To say nothing of how cripplingly destabilizing this war would be to the world order - which would only lead to more chaos and death.
Any large-scale with any Asian nation is going to end up bad. The governments here don't give a damn about the life of their citizens. Their national pride is much more important to them.
Most people here also agree with their governments unless they are the ones who got to go to the front lines which means if a war do break out, the ones who die aren't the one that scream war. They apparently suddenly got issues that make them unable to serve their countries despite their overwhelming desire to do so. A bunch of idiotic and arrogant cowards, I know.

Only an experienced editor who has a name possesses the ability to truly understand my work - What 90% of writers I'm in charge of said.I'm frankly a bit disturbed at the number of people here who hear that war with China is coming, and just go "well, they probably don't have the power to literally annihilate us in a nuclear blast, so NBD I guess." Have our standard sunk so low, so quickly? Do we not care about global stability, humanitarian crises, or capricious leaders manufacturing pointless, destructive wars? "No nukes, and we'll probably win, so s'all good?"
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."

Nah, I mean they can't even really participate in MAD. Their nukes aren't advanced enough and they're some 30 years behind us in terms of technology.
Not even getting to the fact that they don't have the logistics to support their army now, let alone in a conflict or that nobody there has any battle experience.
Oh really when?
