Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

oh I disagree with you on something: Trump would make that wall and he will try to build is promise...but is going to backfire on him, bligly as hell.
in fact, i predict that the Wall is going to be a clusterfuck, with Trump making half ass decision that would complicate things over and over, considering is reaction to Mexico telling him to fuck off(which so far, is one of the few moment Peña actually show some balls for a change)
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Trump wanted to end the electoral college but Mitch Mc Connel talked him out of it.
The comments have a lot of garbage arguments like "but he will be good for Israel, what are you complaining about?" Rings pretty hollow when a good chunk of his base is antisemitic.
Guys, I know this thread moves fast, but can you all please try not to post links that have already been posted before? (The above being one case, but it's been happening a lot this past week.)
It kind of drowns out actual discussion.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Rogue POTUS tweets:
Office pool quietly taking bets on how long it takes Priebus and Bannon to turn into Holyfield v Tyson.
Update on #votegate, while POTUS ordering dbl votes unlikely, may have tried directing which state to vote in.
POTUS calls for investigating voter fraud in states he lost actually an #Unholy Trinity plan. Results will aid "turnout control" efforts.
So far Priebus containing POTUS's plan to order IRS to end audit, but not sure how long he keeps. POTUS chomping at the bit to wield power.
VP Pence to sit in on POTUS/Putin phone call tomorrow. POTUS doesn't like idea, but gave in to pressure from #Unholy Trinity
Okay, now we're starting to get mixed signals from these Rouge Twitters. One is saying that Trump wants to prove he's popular, the other is saying it's Congressional Republicans plan to install harder Voter Laws.
Neither of them explain why Trump keeps chickening out of the Voter Fraud Executive Order...
@Dingo Walley 1: Even assuming those accounts are legit, none of those people will have full access or a complete picture of the situation, before accounting for Trump and his advisers to change tack based on circumstance; and, of course, Trump's flight of fancy for that particular hour. Take it all with a grain of salt the size of California.

I'm sorry, but I neither have the time nor the energy to spend two hours a day in this thread simply getting caught up. If you have a better suggestion to prevent repeat links, please let me know.
Unrelated question: Has anyone set up a nonprofit or something dedicated to getting people the proper identification they need to vote in places with strict ID laws? Would that help at all? I've been searching but I haven't found anything.

As the EC is ingrained into our Constitution, it would literally take an amazement, which requires 2/3rds of Both Houses or 3/4ths of All States to approve of it, to get rid of it. There's a snowballs chance in Hell of us ever doing so.
Problem there, the House has already said they are not going to investigate it (though they can always change their mind). They either have to have Trump start the ball rolling, or it's not happening for 4 years.

My guess is that the executive order delays come from Republicans leaning on him. Because if they're going to strip the country of its democracy, they're not going to leave it in Trump's incompetent hands.

I dunno. I feel like Trump might be able to pull off getting rid of the EC if he really wanted to. It'd probably be easy to convinced the Dems to support it, and the GOP's tendency to fall into line helps.
Though the question is what, exactly, would replace it. If it's just simple popular vote, then fine, but if it's the gerrymandered to hell congressional districts...

Wow, a lot's happened in the day or so my computer was down.
I've just caught up and admit I kinda lost sight of the NN stuff when seeing everything else going on. Not sure if we even need to fight for it, seeing as there's enough big-time tech companies who'd stand against it. Plus . . . would the commissioner of the FCC be able to gut Net Neutrality himself, or would it take a congressional approval to manage?
@Pseudopartition: I do believe there are a number of organizations and charities devoted to getting people registered to vote, yes. And I think that those are an extremely worthy cause, because the more people we can register, the harder it is for the GOP to suppress the vote.
Though it needs to be pointed out that there are hurdles even once you're registered. Lack of polling places in targeted areas, inconvenient hours, unexpected ID requirements, endless lines (that are effective at weeding out disabled people)...there's more to voters suppression than just voter ID laws.
Even once your ballot is cast, you're still not safe. Because of shit like Crosscheck. Which (as I understand it) the GOP used to purge hundreds of thousands of votes in the last election, on very dubious grounds. That, in many ways more than anything else, is what concerns me, because there's no direct way for the average citizen to fight back against something like that. Right now, Trump has created a narrative that would give them political cover for purging millions of votes from future ballots, controlling the election result.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."There's only one of these and if there are anymore then they're fake.
The Republicans are using Trump's idiocy for their own gain.

If the President was dependent on Popular Vote alone, it wouldn't matter how hard Republicans Gerrymandered; America would almost always have a Democrat President because of California, New York and Illinois.
And yet, they're also telling him to not go through with it because there's no evidence (according to the first leak). And Congress right now is saying they won't investigate Voter Fraud, regardless of what Trump does.
Also, from one Twitter post, there were at least 6 diversified ones.

Honestly, this song probably describes the Resistance against Trump nicely.

Good thing my state of Virginia is coming around to avoid the rest of the south's pitfalls.
Except for the state legislature which is full of batshit conservatives. God I hope Mc Aulliffe stays, at least.
Concerning the guy who is so proud that he brought down the Soviet Union: He brought down nothing! The Soviet Union brought down itself and if there is any politician who deserves the credit for the whole process happening fairly peaceful, it's Genscher and not some guy whose name I can't even remember. He won't bring down the EU either...the EU will succeed or fail on its own.

So, as someone who is ruled by moron like Trump, I will said something: in a way, the best weapon the dems have against trump is....well, himself, he is too much of a Moron to actually being smart, even in a realpolitik kind of way and that would low is popularity.
BUT and this is the key thing, the rep will try to stop the dems to take anything, as Trump opinion suffer the GOP will just shut down everything it gives the dems power, in this case I will confirm Bluefish fears: is going to be a tought and brutal fight right now.
