Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations

before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Bloomberg: "Trump’s Immigration Ban Excludes Countries With Business Ties"
. Funny detail: of the 9/11 plane hijackers, none of them were from countries on the list.
I don't think most people believe the US is going to let California go but with all these rumblings from California about changing the state constitution to make it so California is no longer indivisible from the US and a referendum if approved (and if the people vote for independence) could scare D.C. into appeasing the state.
On the other hand, PA helped sell out humanity. By a narrow margin mind you, but still...
Maybe if most of the state starts regretting their decision. Otherwise, you could probably jump over the state lines before a split (assuming a shooting war isn't going down).
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Something not directly related to the Clown-in-Chief though it fits his era...
Tulsi Gabbard's Syria meeting with Assad sparks outcry
Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger called it "a shame and a disgrace".
After her week-long visit to Syria, Ms Gabbard submitted the "Stop Arming Terrorists" bill, which is designed to halt US support for Syrian rebel groups.
In a statement on Wednesday she urged the US to "end our war to overthrow the Syrian government and focus our attention on defeating al-Qaeda" and the so-called Islamic State.
I uh don't know what to say about this one either...

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesIt'd split into two countries (a West Coast country and a Northeast coast country) although a country made of the West Coast and East called The Coastal States of America would be an interesting name considering the last secession movement's acronym for their country was also CSA but I doubt we want to be associated with them.
But anyways that would halve the original US' economy maybe worse.

@New York: If secession ever happened the state would probably split in two between Upstate and Downstate.
Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite. That's what people say about Catalonia within Spain but it's still worth talking about it.
I mean the independence movement has been gaining a lot of steam within California and it's just one week so far.
The thing is that this independence movement is just situational. Take Trump out and you remove the steam behind it.
If Trump doesn't give up power, he gets re-elected despite fucking the country up or another republican just as bad wins without the popular vote then that's when things really start blow up.
Here's the thing about thay California constitution thing - the change doesn't mean dick because the states are already indivisible as per the US Constitution (not in the actual text, but via SCOTUS precedent hinging on the words "more perfect union" and the "perpetual union" clause of the Articles of Confederation).

- Trump Mexico wall will destroy lives, Berlin mayor warns
Mr Mueller warned such divides cause "slavery and pain" and would "destroy the lives of millions"... "We cannot let our historical experience get trashed by the very people to whom we owe much of our freedom: the Americans. "I call on the president not to go down the road of isolation," the statement reads (in German). "Mr President, don't build this wall."
- Trump's looming 'extreme vetting' order sows seeds of panic
Tom Jensen, an immigration lawyer in Washington DC, spent a good portion of his day yesterday on the phone to a frantic client in Iraq.
- I dont know what to say about this one...
- Lancaster, Pennsylvania: America's refugee capital
Lancaster, Pennsylvania has taken 1,300 refugees since 2013 but the policy is still controversial.
Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesIn December 2016, after a three-year process, the man and his family were finally approved for resettlement in the US. They are scheduled to board a plane for the US on 7 February.
But on Wednesday, after an alleged draft copy of President Donald Trump executive action on refugees and immigration from predominantly Muslim countries was leaked to the press, panic erupted around the globe among refugees, their families and advocates. Jensen's client considered spending considerable money to buy next-day tickets for himself, his wife and his three children in an effort to outrun President Trump's pen.
The leaked copy of the draft order - titled "Protecting the Nation From Terrorist Attacks by Foreign Nationals" - has not been acknowledged by the White House. However, other leaked executive orders have been proven to be authentic copies and were signed by Trump over the past week.
The draft refugee order could also be altered before it lands on Trump's desk. Nevertheless, its contents caused considerable reaction in the US press and among immigration lawyers trying to figure out what will come next.
The most dramatic provisions in the draft version would suspend all refugee admissions for four months with an exception for "religious minorities", indefinitely bar entry for Syrian refugees, and suspend all visa entry into the US from seven countries for 30 days. Those countries have predominantly Muslim populations, and are reported to be Syria, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Libya, Sudan and Yemen.
[Kay Bellor], like other refugee advocates, frets that closing the country to refugees and especially to former allies who assisted in US conflicts is actually a threat to national security.
"I think it's really going to hurt our standing in the world," says Heller. "Whatever our next foreign policy adventure is, we're going to need local buy-in. If we abandon our allies on this, we're going to have trouble finding new allies."
This US town takes 20 times more refugees per capita than the rest of the US.
