Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The man the Fuhrer tapped to be ambassador to the EU just said that he wants to bring it down like the Soviet Union.
This is fine.
A strategic analyst explains how the current motivation of US leadership (that is to say, Bannon) isn't populism or nationalism - it's to burn the country down and dance among the ashes.
This really can't be repeated enough times.
I've been keeping this
one in my head, myself.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."@Brain Sewage: Au contraire, mon frere:
Demonstrators flood the streets of Philadelphia
Washinton's New Normal- A Trump Protest A-Day
Hundreds march in Evanston, Chicago to protest Trump
Protesters gather in New York as fear grows over Trump's immigration plans
Cities are declaring themselves sanctuaries, government workers are setting up rogue twitter accounts, the entire top-tier of the State Department just resigned, and scientists are planning a march.
And i can assure you from my own personal experience that, at the local level, people are starting to organize things behind the scenes. Not just protests but lobbying networks and campaigns to elect people to office.
Things are happening. We may all look back at this and realize that this is when the progressive movement in America really organized itself and took off.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.

A bit premature to declare "ABANDON ALL HOPE!" I think. Any by "a bit" I mean I might consider seriously thinking about it if things go downhill for the next...fifty years or so. Because I believe that while a battle may of been lost, the war never ends and one way or another humanity will survive.

It's true. There are valid concerns about how much of it will translate into concrete action - but the Women's March was the single biggest mass protest in US history. (And it wasn't just national, it was global.) And as ![]()
points out, the protests continue in cities across the country.
Even in my little city, people are organizing. There's a local Indivisable chapter, and a grassroots movement to try and unseat our scumbag Congressman.
As cynical as I've been, I don't think the American people are taking this one lying down.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."I'd note that with the State Department they didn't truly resign so much as we're fired. They have to offer their resignation to every new president, but normally the resignation is refused (as it had been several times with the top level officials), all of them were accepted this time. It's unclear if that's because Trump wants to put him own people in and dam institutional knowledge, or if he and his team just didn't know that such resignations are a formality that aren't meant to rob accepted.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThinkProgress has catalogued all of the events (read: horrible shit) that has happened since Trump's inauguration, with the intention of making it easier to keep track of.
A lot of people are theorizing that the sudden, overwhelming burst of scandals and terrible proposals is entirely deliberate, intended to confuse people and make it harder for anyone to keep track of what's going on. This is meant to counteract that.
Trump will bring other Republicans down with him. We can't play the "blame Congress" game because that's an exceeding complex and multifaceted target. Nuance is useless in political warfare. The Republians captured the House and Senate by capitalizing on disappointment in Obama, we will have to do the same with Trump.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Trump's likely EU Ambassador would love for it to go away

2016-2020/2024 is going to earn an unflattering nickname by historians isn't it?
New Survey coming this weekend!![]()
If there are still historians with the freedom to give that time period an unflattering name, yes. Otherwise, either a global thermonuclear war or a natural disaster (probably caused or accelerated by Trump and Putin's refusal to lift a finger to do anything about anthropogenic climate change) would have wiped out humanity, or their fascistic replacements will celebrate it as the death of democracy and the rebirth of fascism.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryWell now.
Remember how the Trump intel dossier said that he was offered a 19% share in Rosneft in exchange for lifting the sanctions?
Well, he's "considering" lifting the sanctions...
...and a 19.5% stake in Rosneft was just sold to some anonymous person.
Addendum: Okay, upon doing a little more searching it's possible that that stake in Rosneft was sold to Glencore and QIA.
Or not. Massive corporate stake sales are a little over my head, I confess.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Bringing up an old topic... Has there been any further news about this
? I don't remember anyone mentioning if the Democrats involved had revealed what it is that they had discovered from the briefing that pissed them off so much.
@Septimus Heap
: What does "Anthropospora" mean?
Not a word. Whatever they learned is highly classified for sure. Which has done nothing to sway my opinion that the people need to know anyway, but hey, it's not like anything's at stake, right?
I'll say the same thing to him that I said to Graham - prove it. We all saw how he voted on Tillerson.

Anthropo- is a prefix meaning of or relating to humans, -spora being a suffix that refers to seeds or sporal qualities; presumably it's intended to evoke "diaspora".
As far as Trump's tarrif plans go, we'll have to see what happens; considering the disparity in hard power, it's entirely possible this will escalate to the point where the American military is garrisoning the border, since there's no way in hell I can see Trump backing down, and it's all but guaranteed if Mexican leaders think Trump really will start a war that they'll come to an agreement. Forcing Mexico to pay for the wall at gunpoint is...not going to be very conducive to continued international stability however. In fact, it would basically signal a return to the geopolitical landscape of the 19th century.

It's a work of fiction, but Capsase's translation is correct anyhow.
Basically, fictional infectious disease that caused a major epidemic thanks to the American healthcare system being crippled by the Trump presidency. While very non-lethal by itself, it did cause the US economy to implode and the name stuck to the time.

I should keep that clip ready....I have the feeling that I will have a lot of use for it in the future, especially now that the US president has started to quote comic book movie villains....as a reminder:
