Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@fruitpork: Really? Got a link to that story? I'm curious as to the details.
Have we talked about this shit yet?
The director of the National Parks Service was ordered by the Fuhrer to produce pictures of the inauguration that backed up his utterly fraudulent claims as to crowd size.
Oops, turns out the story was from months ago. Darn.
In other news though, some wh staff have made a rogue account.

Trump delays "Voter Fraud" Order, House Oversight Committee will not be involved
. Well, there's Congressional Republicans having a spine against Trump... Enjoy it for a Couple of days I guess...
So Shia LaBeouf did get arrested over a scuffle during his live stream
. No idea as to what exactly happened to cause it, though.
Well, some positivity: I don't think this was even mentioned, but there are mass anti-Trump protests in Philadelphia happening even after the conclusion of the Women's March.

Chaffetz? Displaying a spine and integrity? Will wonders never cease.
Covering his own ass in some way, no doubt. Or just putting up the usual song-and-dance of independence before caving in like all the rest.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."The thing with Shia Le Bouf getting arrested. The video of Shia shouting down the Nazi that got into his face still felt like Shia was going to deck him or wanted to, and since Shia is kinda crazy, I give him a lot of credit with not actually decking the Nazi.
This time, something must've pushed him over the edge.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Cracked wrote an article that presents arguments and counterarguments to "punching Nazis". It's written intertwined with comedy - whether one likes or not the style there - but I feel like it provides a good view on the subject. "Katie", the side opposing "punching Nazis", words her thoughts better than I've done so far when pondering about the subject. However, there's a Jewish joke in the middle and dogs pooping, and people might take offense to that? I honestly can't tell right now. I better go to sleep. So, anyways, here's the link
.
Captain America summed up my opinion on this matter pretty well.

REMOVE SOY LATTE remove soy latte you are worst hipster. you are the hipster idiot you are the hipster smell. return to portlandia. There is a general right to be secure in one's person and possessions, and someone saying hateful propaganda contributes to a hostile environment in which harmful acts are more likely to be committed against the target of that hate.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Meanwhile, Captain America sums up my thoughts on the matter here

I kind of disagree. I think there's quite good reason to consider Nazism an unacceptable belief. It's just that freedom of speech means that they have a right to express those beliefs. And you can't punch them (well, you can, but it's illegal). To the extent that the panel seems to suggest that Nazism is just one of many beliefs competing in a marketplace of ideas, I disagree.
And besides, Captain America is currently a Nazi in the comics...

I don't know...the Germans banned Nazism outright and are running a much better functioning republic. And Athens back in the day used to screen people for oligarchical sympathies.
That said, I have no idea of any fair way of how societies go about deciding "we do not discuss this."
Not quite how that was meant to sound. More like the Germans haven't fallen down a slippery slope into virtually banning freedom of expression. Though history has certainly helped them understand that they have a republic if they can keep it more than any other.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesThe banning of Nazism and being a well-functioning republic probably aren't related.
Didn't know there was a second one. Man, I need to catch up.

REMOVE SOY LATTE remove soy latte you are worst hipster. you are the hipster idiot you are the hipster smell. return to portlandia. There's something ironic in how the reason that was given for not allowing people whose first citizenship wasn't American to become President was that they'd be too open to foreign influence, only for us to get a native-born President who's almost certainly compromised by a foreign power.

Pretty sure they're directly related. Like, after WWII, they went 'whelp, let's make super certain that nonsense never happens again' and then they made sure that nonsense never happened again, and then they continued to function properly. And now they're one of the few democracies that appears to be effectively resisting the current wave of right-wing insanity.
The line of casualty's pretty clear.

While I have zero sympathy for any Nazis getting punched, I'd personally stop short of advocating for their non-metaphoical punching unless they've crossed the line where punching them constitutes self-defense. Moral high ground, not giving the enemy ammunition ("see, they're violent and dangerous and crackdowns are neccecary!"), yadda yadda.

Resisting a certain trend in politics has no effect on how well the government functions. A functioning democracy is built on careful planning and a good foundation.

@whitehouseleak2 is a new incarnation of the alleged White House Leak Twitter account that was shut down earlier.
Guess the resistance continues.
In somewhat surreal news, Ed Miliband and Tory backbenchers have joined forces to warn Theresa May about Trump. There was a time when Tories wouldn't be seen dead joining forces with Ed over anything. They're all very worried about her acting like things with the US are normal when they so obviously aren't.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.
