Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Any country in the Western Hemisphere attempting to wage a trade war against Trump's American is very likely to find itself on the recieving end of American hard power either covertly (can you say CIA coup plots?) or even overtly; this is one of the reasons I have always been extremely critical of American hegemony in general; there's almost nothing anyone in the hemisphere can do to stop him.
If what I fear might be happening actually comes to pass, this sort of neomercantalist thinking will spread like wildfire across the world, and soon enough we'll be back to 19th century style imperialism and spheres of influence under a different name.

Russia isn't part of the Western Hemisphere, and even then, neither they nor China can really do anything about the United States doing it's usual routine in Latin America even if they cared to, in the same way the United States can't stop Russia from fucking with post-Soviet states and engineering frozen conflicts to create buffer zones.

That tax is gonna be a huge problem for me, as I am a primarily Japanese gamer. The Nintendo Switch is pretty much doomed now (At least in North America) too. Anyways, I am going to back out of this topic to preserve my sanity, so this might be my last post here.

Mexico provides like 70% of the imported fresh fruits and vegetables that the US consumes. All this will achieve is the import companies going "well, Mexico is too expensive, let's look at Honduras', El Salvador's and Costa Rica's fruits and vegetables." Chances are that it will royally screw up the US far more than Mexico.
Like, you know what Mexico's car manufacturing sector looks like? They don't actually tend to build whole cars, they build specific parts that aren't usually made in the US. The huge international companies are likely to have a plant or two in the US, and make a lot of their international cars in Mexico because a lot of the infrastructure already exists to do that, and Mexico would love it.

Only the Switch? Considering most Electronics are made in China, Japan or South Korea, it won't just be the Switch. The PS 4, The PS 4 Pro, The X Box One, the X Box Scorpio, even basic Laptops, PC's, Tablets, Smartphones and even TV's are all going to go up in expense.
And again, this will help trigger a Recession...
He wants to apply the Tariff to every nation in the world at some point that isn't the USA. So, it won't matter where they're grown, they're gonna cost 20% more.

Anarchism is a far-left ideology, and has nothing to do with Ayn Rand's objectivism. If anything, Bannon is a fascist—he probably just called himself a "leninist" in order to sound edgy.

One does not shake the box containing the sticky notes of doom! That is something that I think needs to be emphasized. There are no products (beyond some types of food) that have their entire chain of production in the US. Every single one of them is either made elsewhere and brought in, or the pieces are made elsewhere and it's just assembled in the US. Trump has managed to stumble on the single thing that could quite possibly kill the entire US manufacturing sector.
@henry42: You do know that almost every School of Political Thought has multiple schools within them, right? Individualist Anarchism
, for instance, would fit a person like Bannon, who hates external governments and wants to do whatever the hell he wants to, damn with everyone else.

Anarchism and a skeleton crew government done with the US type of libertarian ideology fits in very well with people like Bannon.
That is because if there was no government oversight or any form of governing body outside town communities, means that whoever is wealthy or influential enough to set the rules can do whatever they please. This also means that organized groups could pretty much become rulers of their own cities without answering any other form of government or be accountable for their misdeeds.
In case of white nationalists like Bannon, this means that minorities are target practice at worst and second class slaves at best, which also lets them enforce their own vision of how the US should be and simply do away with anyone who disagrees with impunity.
Also Henry, Anarchism isn't inherently left wing or right wing. Basically anarchism in itself should be above political leanings of left and right where it constitutes the lack of a governing body being imposed on the population and instead the decisions are made from the bottom up without the need for a government. There are right and left wing versions of Anarchism with right wing anarchism being the US brand of libertarianism while the left wing anarchism being communism.
Inter arma enim silent legesFolks like Bannon envision Thunderdome style arrangements where poor people battle for whatever tidbits their masters dribble out, with the few survivors paraded around as an example of how you can rise above your peers if you struggle hard enough. They read The Hunger Games and look at it as an example of how to run a nation, with Snow as the hero. They see the opposition party as Coin, struggling for power but the same basic mentality inside.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I can see that the Mad Max references are going to be holding steady over then next 4+ years. Let's just hope they don't become too directly relevant.
Myself, I've been diligently doing my part trying to turn "Immortan Don" into a thing.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."I was at least history-savvy enough to predict the end of the American Empire. It doesn't matter how big or strong your military or economy is if you don't have the leadership to properly use them. Rome found that out the hard way. To be fair, though, I was expecting the American Empire to last a bit longer.

Neon Genesis Donald Trump.
