Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Man, what finally gave them the idea that the voters wanted them to dig in and push back? Was it the march of millions of people around the world basically screaming "SPINE UP AND FIGHT, YOU COWARDS?"
Well, let's see if this amounts to action, or just a lot of tough talk. Will it actually move the wimps in Congress, for instance? Schumer in particular needs to wake up and dispense with any notion of bipartisanship or negotiation.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."@Tactical: I don't see much of a choice in the matter unless GOP leaders suddenly start developing a spine, but you have to realize they're going to nuke the filibuster once senate democrats try something.
Which is another reason why I put so much emphasis on trying to peel away GOP leadership even if that means compromising with them; they are the only ones who can stop Trump; senate democrats are just along for the ride unless we can get some GOP lawmakers to turn.

Has actual filibustering been nuked or just the cheep workaround where one threatens a filibuster and doesn't have to follow though? Because if actual filibusters are still possible it might be time for the Dems to try them.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranWhat's good for the goose is good for the gander. 8 years of full obstructionism caused enough damage for the Republicans to win 2016, I want to see what we can do in 2 years.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranFrom the Politico article: "In legislative proposals, campaign promises, donor pitches and even in some Senate hearings, Democrats have opted for a hard-line, give-no-quarter posture, a reflection of a seething party base that will have it no other way."
About. Freaking. Time.
Dems start developing their strategies
: "...Manchin and nine other Senate Democrats are up for reelection next year in states that Trump won. Much of the event appears geared at figuring out how to turn people who supported Trump into Democratic voters in 2018.
Former Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear (D), along with Sens. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), held a session on “speaking to those who feel invisible in rural America," according to the schedule. Other sessions were along similar lines: “Listening to those feel unheard” and “Rising America — They feel unheard too.”
On Thursday Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) will discuss political tactics for the midterm election and Democrats will strategize on how to define themselves and Trump. Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) will talk about “Triangulating Trump,” emphasizing that they can go around Republicans by trying to work with Trump on infrastructure, outsourcing and trade."
Interesting. Let's hope they have the courage of their workshop convictions.
Oh, and that story about the State Department officials who resigned? It was six of the topmost positions, including Patrick Kennedy, the undersecretary.
Along with the Rogue Government Twitter revolt, this has to mark the greatest open revolt by gov't workers in, well ever.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.![]()
That's another problem entirely: If there's a 35% Tariff on Imported Goods, especially from Mexico, that will kill many Businesses in Mexico and that will only guarantee MORE Illegal Immigrants are going to come here.
It'd be one thing if it was just the Wall, but it's also a Tariff and increased Policing of Illegals. It's essentially a giant Middle Finger to Mexico and other Hispanic Countries and us yelling at them "You stay poor you freakin' Brown People!" The Wall is a waste of Money, it's not going to stop anyone from coming over, and it's just an exercise in Racism and Fascism.
David Frum on Twitter: "So we’re all going to feel very pleased with ourselves when the Mexicans replace Pena Nieto with a left-wing anti-American nationalist"
. And I think he's probably right about that happening.
Even if he builds it with prison slave labor? To say nothing of the damage it would do to the environment and the ecosystem.
And I mean...we're talking about 10 to 40 billion dollars here. Think of how much good could be done with that money, instead of turning it into a racist monument to stupidity. Hell, here's a list.
It's true that it's probably one of the least destructive things Trump is attempting...but that's a damn low bar. It should still be opposed tooth and nail.

No doubt, but then that would be called domestic terrorism and lead to a crackdown. Anyone they catch trying to sabotage its construction gets arrested on trumped-up (heh) charges and is quite possibly never seen again.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."

"What is it? What have they sent us?"
"Hope."
