The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You know...I am kind of happy about Trump building that wall. No better way to demonstrate once and for all why this is a stupid idea.

Since it entails severely damaging every single ecosystem along that border, I'm not as happy. It's such a wasteful, pointless project for about a dozen reasons.

[up] As long as it gives the illusion of creating job opportunities . . .

I'd wholeheartedly support reviving the Works Progress Administration if it wasn't Trump and the GOP at the helm. Who would know what they'd demand to be built.

W...what the fuck...

Trump is preparing executive orders that would reduce the US's role in the UN.

Optimistic me is that Congress will get cold feet at the bill and that some local governments will be obstructionist. This way it may end up being a costly ineffective boondoggle.

More general question - does anyone know what's going on with Kasich?

Still wants to take down Obamacare, denounced Trump's fake news cronies and assault on NATO, came out in support of Trump's Sec. of Education nominee.

There's "I'm going to bring back American jobs" and there's "I'm going to cripple the UN and throw the world order into chaos."

This shouldn't come as a shock, I know. But somehow I keep expecting the world to suddenly come to its senses.

This is why you can't ever EVER trust Republicans in power. The old days where it didn't really "matter" (tho it did, but not as much) which party had the Presidency and Congress is over.

So how long do you guys think Trump will be last in Office? Since it's been established that building the wall and mass deportation would do more harm than good.

I'm pretty sure that he won't be reelected at this rate.

I am still awestruck how those idiots don't realize the US prosperity hinges on a stable world and having multiple trade partners.

The idiots who despise globalism can't even define what it is and how it hurts them besides repeating "Dey took our jerbs!".

It doesn't matter how much the US gains through retail and the inflation is kept low by importing cheap goods made abroad, but I guess working 8 hours a day 6 days a week and getting barely a minimum wage is the american dream for those people.

Also anyone wanna bet that Trump will behave like Christina Kirchner? Where the only true data about the economy and employment is the one from the government and everything else is either fake news or simply publishing any data that doesn't match the government's alternative facts being a criminal offense?

Well, that'd be a good thing. Alt facts don't pay one's bills or save one's life, after all.
