Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Link: Cronyism and/or good old fashioned inefficiency. If we're lucky he gets embarassed by the jobs leaving anyway.
Donald Trump appeared to have registered 8 companies in Saudi Arabia while campaigning
. In case you were wondering whether there was something amiss with SA not being on a list of countries exporting Radical Islamic Extremism or whatever they call it.
EDIT: Assange is now claiming that the pardoning of Chelsea Manning is intended to make life hard for him
.
Well, congratulations then, in my books he's earned the right to be at the center of a Major International Incident on non-political grounds this time.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotJesus. The election rigging is officially getting underway.
Sounds good, right? Wrong, when you remember that these congressional districts are gerrymandered as hell. This thread lays it out
- when unchecked gerrymandering is taken into account, this is the GOP straight-up trying to rig elections. And this is separate from the coming assault on voting rights.
The Lieutenant Governor of California openly denounces this as the GOP trying to end democracy,
saying "it's all at stake now."
That's insidious, really. Because getting rid of winner-takes-all turns the Electoral College into something a lot more reason, which is a thing there's a lot of support for right now. But only one state doing it just unbalanced things in favour of whichever party doesn't currently have the popular vote there (and guess who that is?)
But even that's forgivable- a regrettable side effect of a step in the right direction. If it wasn't the complete nonsense that is Gerrymandering and my continued confusion about why anyone thought it would be a good idea in the first place.
But didn't I hear something about the Gerrymandering was successfully challenged in VA? I seem to remember that being a thing.
Oh. And it keeps coming.
The Fuhrer intends to cut off federal funding for sanctuary cities.
He's going to try to starve them out. That also tells us that he's serious about mass deportations - which will require camps. Actual. Camps.
And Mikki Kendall issues a warning about what Trump's threat towards Chicago really means: turning Chicago into an urban war zone.
Chillingly, she begs us to remember - when it starts, know that Chicago was full of innocent families, not whatever the state-run media will tell us about them.
Is Trump trying to trigger an insurrection? I mean, I know the US military leans right, but will they really go along with suppressing their own people en masse?
And I bet the Oath Keepers will go back on their word once they realize they get to shoot Democrats and not their fellow fascist militiamen.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
x2 You'd think so, wouldn't you? If Trump goes around shooting up cities en masse, or actually starts putting people into camps, or even does both of them at the same time, he's not just going to have a riot. He is in fact going to have a full blown insurrection. And he'll only have brought it on himself.

There's still the Posse Comitatus Act to work around... which coincidentally was brought into existence so the mean, mean Union army couldn't squish Confederate apologists during Reconstruction.
And, um, the issue that the US military has tighter rules of engagement than city police departments.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotCanada, as always, the token good teammate of North America: Canadian Scientists Warn U.S. Colleagues: Act Now to Protect Science under Trump
. That was from last month, but they may have set off the mass backups and data savings that US scientists did while people accused them of being paranoid.
I wonder if we deserve having Canadians as neighbors...In any case, if the GOP have Russia (or rather Russia has the GOP), we might have the support of Canada (and whatever other democracies may remain by the end of the year).
The thing about Trump establishing martial law in inner cities is that because of the better training higher standards of engagement soldiers are held to, it might very well improve the crime situation and the excessive force situation, which could be a prelude to major police reforms that would increasingly put local police under federal control.

The government in Ottawa won't risk angering Trump, the economic consequences would be too severe. Maybe they will oppose Trump if he starts butchering people in the street, assuming the Conservatives (who are in the middle of leadership race that will determine what direction the party goes in, and some of the options are Trump lite) don't take power.
We aren't in any position to stand with the American public beyond offering moral support, Trump could crush our economy with a penstroke, and our only consolation would be counter tariffing the US into a depression along with us.
Maybe in the short term. Even when the soldiers and officers in question aren't butchers driven by ideology, martial law rarely works well in the long run. Armies are not designed with law enforcement in mind.

I don't see American police and military police crossbreeding anytime soon. This isn't France or Italy.
Plus police reform gets in the way of the GOP's desire to wipe clean the streets of undesirables.

APFSDS, MPAT or something different?
In all seriousness, the city is not tank territory. Too vulnerable, plus the tracks kill roads like you wouldn't believe.
I can't believe I'm saying this but making dumb people look dumb somehow is unfun

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotThe about-face is unbelievable. For years, conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones fretted about the U.S. becoming a police/prison state. Well, here we are, and suddenly we don't hear a peep of protest. Seriously, Trump is the kind of president people like Alex Jones and his followers SHOULD be freaking out about in this context, but they're not. I wonder why.
Something of interest for me (and denizens of California): Huntington Beach desalination plant is among Trump priorities, leaked document shows
. That's a desalination project for Los Angeles, if memory serves. It seems like a good idea, unlike this other thing
.

This is the reason why I've been silent in social media and comment sections since the election.
Never argue with dumb people and trolls, that is exactly what they need to drag you to their level.

Alex Jones and his ilk don't care if the US becomes a fascists nationalist state as long as they are the ones making the rules.

Inter arma enim silent leges

@Zendervai In Europe, far-right in general tends to focus more on immigration and ultra-patriotism rather than 'family values' or the 'fight' against communism. They fear and despire the left, to be sure, but economically they tend to be very statist, protectionist, anti-upper class, pro- weath redistribution populists. Most of which would be considered left wing in the US.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.
