Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Of course something will come of this-the justification for more voter suppression under the guise of 'security'.

Your confidence is misplaced. This investigation will be a complete sham, and turn up exactly what Trump wants it to turn up. Do we actually think Sessions is going to launch a good-faith investigation into nationwide voter fraud? Sessions the KKK sympathizer who supports prosecuting civil rights activists?
This will not provide the proof that voter ID laws are bullshit. This is them establishing exactly the political cover they need for more voter ID laws and other means of suppression, including probably straight-up purging votes after they've already been cast.
Also, even if it does require Congress to pass (there's no guarantee that he won't just executive order it, or lean on the DOJ), the GOP control both the House and the Senate. And the GOP have proven by now that they're spineless, morally bankrupt cowards who will cling ever on the Trump Train as it wrecks the world. They'll pass it.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Gotta agree, with all due respect to him, John McCain's words are as empty as Donald Trump's head. He always falls in line like the rest. Again, no plan, promise, or prediction that depends on members of the GOP displaying basic human decency or sticking to any principle other than "never, ever go against the party" is doomed to failure because the governmenal Republicans do not have these things. The only defenses that exist are the SCOTUS and the possibility of the Dems and Independents forming a 100% united front, which is a tall order, seeing as the left runs on We Are Steuggling Together.

"Fascist or not, they will never win, no matter what action they make, they will never completely consume the world as long as rationality it's around."
The American people are breathtaking in their stupidity. We may be able to reverse some of Trump, but it will take decades and the effort will probably fail. Trump will, and must be resisted, but he's the product of America's institutional failures, which is something that will be ignored by our political rhetoric. America is not great, America is not good; it isn't, it never was, and it never will be. Trump is the symptom of a national disease, not an alien concept imposed on our society.

WWIII almost started many times in the tense cold war...even before Trump, there were signs of it in Ukraine and Korea but it never came through...even Trump and Putin in power wouldn't be able to pull off that kind of conflict if it was subverted many times.
Deterrence is everything, no one wants to disrespect it at all. I'm saying this from common sense.
Or maybe is my common sense is wrong and that we are indeed destined for a inhabitable future of world fascism?

Times are changing. We're entering a new world order, one where the world's best peacekeeping force is being broken apart and the world's most powerful country is in the hands of a capricious maniac. Radical right-wing dictators are on the rise, and the US seems to have every intention of both sabotaging democracy in Europe (on Russia's order, and with their help) and provoking China into military conflict.
Also, a brief positive note - Greenpeace protestors have scaled a crane near the White House and unfurled a giant "RESIST" banner.
The Left, at least, has a lightningrod in Trump. The trouble is less "leftist disunity," because Hillary cleaned up in progressive bastions. The trouble is with independents and the exaltation of the "moderate." Why are you moderate on labor rights, on social justice, on gender equality, on trans rights, on keeping corporations out of government, on keeping church and state separate; why are you moderate on ensuring the quality of public schools, public infrastructure, public media, and the regulation of finance? What value is there in moderation between yes and no?
Give me ice or hot running water. Don't give me a stagnant pool of lukewarm filth. We praise mediocrity and mistake it for wisdom.

Naturally not. If WW3 does happen (still saying "if," mind you), the States and Russia are going to be on the same side. We're forming the new Axis.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Well, some vaguely good news about anti-intellectualism - scientists are preparing to run for public office.
It'd be nice if they did this when we still had some guarantee of free and fair elections, but I'll take it.
And they're also planning to march on Washington,
in a move mirroring the Women's March.

You're not delusional, but I think you're underpinning your assertions with outdated assumptions, born from a mindspace where Donald Trump was just a crazed old man with a reality show and a few billion dollars, our political discourse was conventional, though not usually reasonable, and our government was led by competent people.
Remember that for fascism to be dethroned from its place as democracy's primary ideological rival, a worldwide total war with tens of millions of deaths and untold billions in lost economy, the complete destruction of most of Europe, and its reconstruction, stone by stone, person by person, into a broadly liberal democracy was necessary. Fascism doesn't just go away. It's built on primal urges that exist within the psyche of every human being.
Let's be specific — the English. I gained a huge amount of respect for Scotland after their rejection of Brexit and the general left-wing bent of their discourse.

Sorry...I was just wondering if there could be anyone who still believes in the best for the world no matter what may happen, we survived many times around in the worst moments of history, then we could survive again in those, I don't like cynicism taking the mindset of some people in cases like this without taking into account the development of the world...
I hope it doesn't seem like we're trying to browbeat you or anything. I value your hope, and I think it's actually going to be crucial if we want to get through this. Despair invites surrender, and cynicism invites apathy. If we don't think things can get better, we've got no motivation to try, and then we really are screwed.
I'm just trying to paint a picture of how dire the situation potentially is. Once we appreciate the scale of the threat, only then can we properly address it.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."We survive many great horrors but those horrors still happened. I have faith that we will survive Trump as a people, but a large number of individual people will not survive Trump.
World War 2 was survived but it still happened, we will survive Trump but the devastation caused by the global rise of Fascism is going to lead to many many deaths.
A question I've been meaning to ask, what are the odds of Mantis reinstating Don't Ask Don't Tell?
