The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Guess where Trump got that "send the feds to Chicago" idea? Time's up it's fucking Fox.

He's popular with the base - and he always will be - because they finally have a president who's dumb enough to drink the kool-aid himself.

[up] I already warned my friend who lives there in Chicago. He lives at the Southwestern side, so if worst comes to worst he should be OK.

Trump seems to be working on LBJ logic. Him or (more than likely) one of his advisors know they have limited time before the masses rise up, so they are doing everything they can to screw us up before then.

Also, donate to your local public radio stations and PBS.
Word is that they're trying to privatize PBS. Yet another one of the 'yuge' budge cuts that represents about 0.01% of the budget. Not that I was expecting common sense...

But yes, education is going to be vital moving forward. Especially now that they're pushing the narrative that the only facts are made-up nonsense that conforms with their worldview.

It seems to me like President Donald Trump is the result of a perfect storm of American political failings. Pretty much all the things about the US political process that could have gone wrong did.

I think that being in the government would give a good purpose to my life (not as a part of the Trump apparatus, no way in hell would I ever associate with people like him) but given who I am I'm probably not suited for that sort of thing. At least, I think me being elected President would be America making a terrible mistaketongue

I never wanted in this thread, but this is important.

It's offical, four journalists have felony charges after covering the inauguration. Democracy just died.

Been dead for a while, bud. We've gone full kremlin now. How long until journalists get murdered?

[up][up]What the hell kind of charges are they accusing them of? Being part of "riots"? How?

From the Guardian article:

None of the arrest reports for the six journalists makes any specific allegations about what any of them are supposed to have done wrong.
Admittedly, I don't think I have the frame of reference to judge whether or not this sort of thing is typical, but this has to be the most chilling thing I've read today.

Okay. I've calmed down from meltdown mode. It seems these reporters were in the wrong place at the wrong time is all. That happens. Carry on.

I can tell right now Trump will go down as one of the worst US Presidents in history alongside the likes of Buchanan, Johnson, Nixon and Dubya.

Trump has nearly all of their negative traits, and none of their redeeming qualities. I'm pretty sure I'd feel safer if any of them were POTUS today instead of Trump.

I heard about a lot of male politicians who made sexist and misogynistic comments about the Women's March. How do men like that even have wives?

I wonder what these politicians think about the men that attended the Women's March. Probably summed up by a bunch of homophobic slurs. But these politicians are more intimidated by the women... and there are going to be more protests where that come from.

Do not obey in advance.

On the wall, what's to stop Trump ordering the military to build it?

As for the idea of Trump having the military gun down people in the street, around half supported him during the election. That number is likely to have changed already and will tank once he starts ordering them to shoot unarmed civilians, sends them off to die in a desert somewhere and/or cuts the VA so that he can have a shinny parade.

Plus even that half number ignores the flip side, if half support him than half don't.

The biggest worry is if th nuclear chain of command supports him enough to drop a nuclear weapon on American soil, I suspect that Trump is crazy enough to order an American city nuked if it defies him.

[up] Even the GOP would scream bloody murder (Let alone the rest of the world) and impeach his ass almost immediately. Not to mention several Red states would most likely get caught in the aftermath, and the police and military won't appreciate their buddies stationed in wherever he is nuking being killed...
